    Air intake Mods?

I lost the cover to my air intake today because the engine back fired, trying to get it to start with Areostart. Took the car for a drive without it. So basically I had a 6" hole to suck air in rather than a 1.5" hole. The car went heaps better!

Has anyone else done something similar? Not so keen to keep this off as I need the filter to be more water proof.

Got to admit, I've always wondered if the 'cone' inlet - hidden behind the front panel/headlight area - is hampering performance, bearing in mind that the inlet hole is around the size of ONE trumpet in the plenum....

in my 3.5 discovery i used to leave the front part of the air filter housing off (the cone bit) as it gave a better induction noise, and felt like it went a bit better in the higher end of the rev range, as the air filter is held in with the long screw, it won't do any harm, unless you give it a mouthful of water...

I saw a 94 Classic 3.9 with a supercharger where the air filter trumpet had been extended a few inches through a hole drilled in the top lip of the edge of the headlight support panel such that it was now just in the gap under the bottom lip of the bonnet, directly in the cool airflow. Musta been ok flow wise even with forced induction or surely would have been turfed.

Of course would cop far more direct water in that position during any heroic creek crossings...

The trumpet is frequently sawn off for dual battery installation with no apparent ill performance effects.

Interesting, If one is not into fording esturies, then the other 99% of its time breathing easier would save a dollar or two.

Supercharger?... Where did they find room to put it !

    Here's a piccie of a supercharged 95. Installation I saw very similar.

Doesn't take up that much room.

The one I saw was for sale at Deacons and also had a modest sculpted bonnet air scoop to cool the top of the blower.

The horn shape reduces induction noise and is supposed to make the engine more responsive at higher revs. Bulean theory (don't know if ive spelt that correctly) says that an inverted cone will draw more air than a cylinder. Those new circular 'fanless' fans work on the same principle.
Ive had the horn off the horn off mine for ages to get the second battery in.
