How to get auto off engine?

I've undone the bell housing bolts, removed the tail shafts and disconnected the cables and wires.

The auto only moves about 1/2 inch backwards i can't get it to budge the rest of the way.

Have you undone the torque converter bolts from the drive plate? If you don't you will have a flood of oil all over the place and risk damaging the front pump seal on the auto box. Removing a trans without unbolting the converter will also risk the converter nose binding in the crank adaptor if the trans isn't pulled exactly in line with the engine. Temporarily rebolt the trans to the engine, undo the four 17mm hex head bolts through the holes in the flywheel, push back the converter as you remove the trans. You can remove the small round plate under the bellhousing to get a look at the converter, and insert a lever, to make sure it is coming clear of the crank.

Wish I read this first. I don't think I could have stuffed this up any worse. Also didn't realise there was a cable attached to the throttle. Bent that al up too. Thanks for the tip though. At least next time, if there is a next time, i'll do it right. I still need to get the torque converter off tomorrow anyway. Even if i have stuffed the torque converter i'm probably going to go manual anyway.
