How to pick the right coils?
Hi all,
I bought an '83 4 door a little while back, and currently it has a set of raised king coils in the front and standards in the rear, the front is to offset a bar and winch. The car currently sits high in the front, rides like crap because of the kings rate and leans to the left... (can you tell I have a bad first impression of Kings?).
Anyway I have 235/85-16's on it and have clearanced the guards to fit them, but I want to give the car a two inch lift at the same time as replacing the dodgy coils (they're only 3 years old...).
My thoughts have been to use a standard rate, which I've found to be 150lbs/in all round... Can anyone verify this? (load leveler still works). This is because I want to retain the magic carpet ride, and it isn't a DD.
But I want to go up 2 inches and the car has a few accessories, so I'm a bit apprehensive about ordering springs as they will be completely custom, most aftermarket for RRC seem to be 180lbs/in at least. The other thing is future mods, but I think I should just pick the springs for how the car is now as they are fairly cheap.
Can anyone give me a guide as to how I should determine the specs of my springs? Eventually I'd like to put extended shocks etc in it, but springs come first.
Looking at Lovells and Dobinsons for my sources, both will do custom rates.
Cheers
Will

Hay,
I've had experience with dobisons (pro comp shocks) and they are great! I currently run EFS(I know who?) springs and shocks and they are amazing.
I'm sorry I can't help, with spring rates etc. all I did was ring them up and tell them exactly what I've got, and what I'm going to do and they supplied the lot.
I would have to say I'm very very happy with the dobisons, they are 4inch high, and the car still drives like and standard rangie... Well pretty bloody good.
Sorry , I don't think I helped much, but the point is maybe ask them for advice.
Cheers Nat

Les Richmond does a good range of RRC springs.
They should still do a "green" which AFAIR is 160 lbs and 16.1 inches and raises about 2 inches. it is the same spec as the original 89-92 rear spring., and the spring that Land Rover used to fit for Heavy duty suspension.
For the rear it will depend on whether you have a working load leveller, but a good spring is LRA "orange" at 180 lb and 17.1 inches , if you do have a working leveller. This gives about 2 inches and a good ride.
I had these in for about 10 years and was very happy.

I'm with Philip on this one, speak to Andrew Richmond at Les Richmond Automotive, tell him what you have and what you want and he'll sort you out. He is very knowledgeable on this and has a large range of coils

Yeah, I'd buy off them if they didn't charge $188 per coil... (pretty sure thats what their site says anyway, didn't go back after I saw that.)
Dobinsons can do custom ones for under $100 each I believe.

If they're still $220- a pair then prices haven't change in a very long time.
