Sounds really good Dougal. You'll get almost the best of the Classic'ness' with the economy and torque of the diesel.
I can't see the etc being an issue, but you'd want to measure the mounting holes for the height sensors carefully. Also bare in mind eas has less roll resistance than coils when your thinking about swaybars.
On a side note, it's not impossible to convert an etc Classic to the 4 wheel etc off the p38. But you would need to put an obd plug in.
