1993 RRC And Its Seat ECU

I'm chasing down why the car's powered mirrors will Up/Dn but will not Left/Right.

During this journey of discovery the memory powered driver's seat/mirrors and its ECU come under investigation and while not yet solving the mirror issue. a question intrigues me about the ECU.

Forums abound with tales of woe of the ECU's internal battery going wrong and spilling danger across PCB tracks. Yet my 20 year old RRC's seat ECU retains to this day its ability to retain settings.

On reviewing Rave's ETM M5 document the suggestion there seems to be that memory retention, as with the radio and its channel settings, depend on the presence of the main battery.

While I could test this by temporarily removing the battery supply, for the moment it is easier to scribe this post hopefully to gather comment/opinion.

    One That Got Away

Thank you Dougal for your replies - from your experiences and from reports elsewhere on the web I though I should take a look at the ECU in case it is suffering battery problems.

The attached image shows a fortunate result - a clean pair of heels. Not bad after 20 years!

Conditions around here are temperate, mainly dry, no snow (or salt) and I do not swim with my RRC nor engage with mud pies - all good things for electronics.

Nothing lowers electronics' MTTF and MTBF numbers than a battery. This is an fortunate exception.

And - as a result of disengaging and remating the ECU's connectors the Left/Right problem is resolved.

That one looks great. Any indication it's been swapped at some point more recently?

    Its Original

No, its the original. I'm the sole owner of the car and have never had seat ECU issues other than the seat switches which required dismantle/clean/reassembly on two occassions.

A clue is the battery's date code of 092 which I am thinking is Q3 of 1992 and is in keeping with the car's build date.

You're incredibly lucky. Mine lived a charmed life too, but the pictures tell the story. It's good now, but I've left it with no battery, just some external wires so I can hook up a battery pack if I feel the urge.

I would have, should I have found battery damage, do the same as you - have the battery outside along with its corrosion - and within check.

If I may, you seem to energetic in this forum's content, what are you hopeful of achieving with your RRC?

For mine I have been chasing cures on accumulating niggles. After a while of living with them the time had come to take action.

The irritation of door handles/latches/locks not doing their thing started it. Then came the upper tailgate. Along the way the cruise control benefited by new tubing. Add to that a sound system which no longer has output shorts.

All in all my '93 starts when it should, stops when it should, and provides a driving pleasure that retains my attention.

I have an 85 vogue which I've had for a long long time with a 4BD1T and Isuzu gearbox. I plan to take the best parts of this 85 and my more recently acquired 93 to build a keeper with all the best bits.

The better body design of the 93 (one piece welded subframe, 85 is screwed together).
The better stereo placement of the 93 (85 has it by the drivers right knee).
The high fuel fill position of the 93.
The extremely tidy interior of the 93 (though my 85 is still very tidy).
    The EAS from the 93.
The 24 spline disco axles and diffs from my 85.
    The 1.003:1 LT230 from my 85.
The 4BD1T certified chassis from my 85.
The 4BD1T and either the 5sp Isuzu it's got or a 6 speed Isuzu if I can make it fit.
The traction control from my 93.
Not sure if I can bring the traction control across with my big front brake calipers. I may have to choose one.

When I'm done the rest will be able to be sold, 93 V8 auto chassis with 85 body on it for sale. It'll be perfect for someone who wants to build a V8 offroad toy.
