sagging... why.. or am I just fat!

    OK gents,

I have noticed alot of Rangies sag to the drives side, IS there a reason or is it just the obvious one. Cos after my adventures out in Toolangi last weekend. Greame (my rangie) has dropped 1 inch on the drivers side. I've checked ll the usual stuff like srping and shocks are all in the correct place. There is alot on the drives side, extra fuel tank, sill tanks (I usually only fill the drivers side, easiest to get to). I am guessing with all this extra weight, the car is constantly imbalanced, resulting in sagging to the drivers side.

    Solution
    Spring Spacers
    OR
    new springs

    so....

    Am I just fat?

    Cheers NAT

Park in the middle of your side of the road, ie, where you'd normally drive.... and wander back and see if it still has a list to starboard.

I understand they're supposed to be like this, to bring them level when on a cambered (normal) road.

IF it still leans to the right.... without you in the driver's seat..... then yes, your obesity has obliterated the springs...

Disclaimer:- Do it at your own risk, using a deserted road is less stressful than a highway...

there may be nothing wrong with your springs at all.
Say for instance that the vehicle has a spring rate of 180lb/inch on each spring, then by loading the vehicle with , say a 180 lb driver, the load will be taken by the RHS F&R coil springs, 90lbs each (for sake of argument) and the vehicle will sag on the rhs a shade under 1/2" (because the driver is not sitting exactly over the line between the two springs) . If you have loaded the vehicle heavily on the RHS then of course it will sag on that side.

One of the benefits of the later model RR EAS airspring is that the EAS ECU detects this and compensates to level the vehicle.

The Classic as I remember it has relatively soft, long travel variable rate springs, so an initial heavy enough static load will take up the "softer" compression element and compress maybe 1". However, double the load and it may only deflect say an additional 1/2" because of the increasing spring rate ... hope this makes sense

Mind you, with age and heavy use, coil springs do develop metal fatigue and ultimately sag. You can either replace the springs (preferably with a matched set) or get your own springs "reset"...which requires them to be heat treated and possibly re-wound..

They are intended to lean to the right. But only by 5-10mm,which is an amount you can barely see.
Mine had misaligned radius arm brackets on the axle which gave it about 1 inch lean with equal springs. I have since fixed that.

You can check if it is caused by the front or rear by jacking up the opposite end in the centre and seeing how it reacts.

Springs - if only I had such mundane concerns.

Any EAS RRs will tackle Ricky May after long Christmas lunch in each seat no wucken furies sitting as square across the axes as the Great Pyramid....

    If operational.

SO the next thing se to find new springs. I Like dobisons, BUT has anyone else got any recommendations? I run EFS shocks. I may give them a call.

    Looks almost ready to "pop"!

    re. konis...see also http://www.rangerovers.net/repairdet...onishocks.html

After my initial enthusiasm for them reported above, the ride deteriorated. the set I got had a heavy gas charge which is not good for EAS compatibility. you need minimal compression and increased rebound to allow the airbag springs to operate properly. In the end I replaced them shortly after I sent the above piece into RR.net and fitted a new set of OEM Boges (at 1/4 price at that time compared with the koni price!). The Konis lay fully extended and undisturbed in a cupboard for about 5 yrs. After a trip to the Cape a couple of yrs ago one of the rear shocks developed a slight oil leak. As a stop gap measure, I replaced them with the rear koni set. The gas charge has somewhat diminished and so it is no longer playing havoc with the EAS settings! Further, the pitching evident with the full set has largely gone and the vehicle sits well on all surfaces. Even a trip up the Warrego Hwy last week where the bitumen is "undulating"!! due to the thousands of trucks per day using the road, the ride was quite passable...that was with an empty vehicle. with 4 passengers and luggage, the ride was even better. Might be onto something here!
