    The new girl

After having it sit in the driveway for three weeks now, I have finally gotten around to getting my newly acquired 2 door running. I've been told that the last it started was nearly A year ago and that it was run on diesel. A can of start ya bastard and an hour cranking it she fired up, bu was running like a dog. So today I rebuilt the carbys. What a ***** to get off the manifold! once it was all back together I tried starting it again to no avail. Turns out there was water in the fuel so I dropped the tank, filled it up and she fired first go. Now to rebuild the gearbox, and the brakes and The list goes on.

She looks neat and reasonably original. A keeper! Good score.
I've recently acquired a 79 with a water in the fuel problem and it seems the leak is from the fuel cap. The rubber seal being the culprit. Worth checking if it's an ongoing problem.

Hi V8Mitch,ive had a couple of "classics" many years ago mine too had water in the tank, turned out the tank was rusted through at the top where the rear bumper is,so every time it rained or i washed the rangie water was just running off the bumper and into the tank,i couldn't see this until i removed the tank, took it to a specialist who cleaned and welded up the holes no dramas after that.thanks jamie

    Hi V8 Mitch,

Nice looking original two door ....welcome to the club.

I'd also look at the following:

    1) Clean Plugs and replace points ..If it has points I'd fit cheap aftermarket electronic ignition (as setting points can be tricky) if distributor is worn and was one of the best investment I've made.

    2) Replace large fuel filter underneath vehicle L H Side from tank just in front of electric fuel pump, it probably has water /dirt in it and engine may be starved of fuel or blocked.
    3) There's also a filter that is replaceable in the engine bay (its in a round steel canister) unscrews from underneath (from memory) again worthwhile replacing or rinsing out with clean fuel to get her started at least.
    4) If you've rebuilt the carbys you'd have fitted new rubber diaphragms so that shouldn't be an issue.
    5) Check pistons in carby's have oil in them, unscrew black plastic screw caps on top of each carby, carefully pull them out it and has piston on end. Light machine oil ..... half a dozen drops in each carby (I think) you'll feel pressure when you slide them back in

    6) Check all hoses are clamped tight and check for any splits causing it to suck air.

That's my 2c worth .....hope she starts for you

    Cheers

Thanks for all the kind words and advice, I'm gonna go through all the filters and hoses etc, and replace what's needed, how common are long ranger tanks? Are disco/ deefer units adaptable? Do the fit under the floor?

    V8Mitch

Not sure about long Ranger tanks .... I've seen them advertized for sale from time to time even for a 2 Door but they are very rare.

Not sure if Disco or Deefa tanks are adaptabe .... excuse my ignorance .... but where is the Northern Beaches in sunny Oz and can you post some photo's of your other two door?

    Cheers
