'Two out of three ain't bad...'

    Remember the song ?

Height sensor in my Classic has a habit of going "Out of Range" and faulting the EAS/ECU. Getting tired of constantly re-setting... and seeing as I've got one spare, I thought I'd destroy the faulty one and find out why.
Initially thought the resistance track was dirty or worn.
Nope, something much simpler... and yes, I suppose I should have guessed.

TWO out of three solder joints inside were 'dry'.

Worst of all, the 3 wires entering the unit have NO stabilisation or clamp. - You can't count the heat-shrink around the entrance thingy.

It sure aint a mil spec component.

    Dat fo sure…

I went through about 3 front right height sensors over 5 years before I got my EAS kicker.

Never disassembled one. So interesting to see just how crappy they are.

I treat EAS resets as a routine job. Still get the occasional front right out of range message en route. But then I just hit the kill switch on the EAS. I reset pre-start up where required. Sensor faults are nothing compared with valve block faults.

After replacing the front right sensor so many times, I'm not sure I trust the out of range message anyway. Might be the ECU, might be the wiring loom…. I was told front right is a common enough fault. Why the other 3 corners don't play up like this is a mystery...

Next job for me is to rebuild the valve block. 20 years is time enough...

Interesting you should say that about RH-Front sensor... This one was originally the LH-Front, and it was playing up then.
    - Have you tried removing/replacing the Big Connecting Block onto the EAS-ECU ? Could be tarnished or loose contacts...

I swapped them side-to-side as this is doubles their effective life.. If you look on the pics you can see the wear on one side of the resistance track, the other is pristine.
My original thought was a worn spot on the track, and it certainly went a lot longer between re-sets after swapping.
One of my rear sensors is of the P38 style, though it looks like it was an OE install, not a replacement.
P38 sensors are position-specific, AFAIK, they can't be swapped side-to-side like the COLVERN 'Classic' OEMs.

On reflection, apart from the soldering done 'incorrectly', that is, no mechanical connection such as wire being looped around the tag or through it, there is nothing to stop individual wires being pulled/pushed.
The complex heat-shrinking of unit onto braided cover merely makes a rigid tube, but the 3 wires can still move inside.
The cable harness must be securely tied to the chassis, to minimise any movement.
    Or else.

Seeing as I have'nt re-installed it, I might (depending on my daily orders from SWMBO) pull it apart again and re-do the soldering and make cable-restraints to my satisfaction...
