It is pretty straightforward spanner spinning.
Remove front and rear propshafts.
Drain transfer and gearbox oils.
Remove shift linkages and wiring from transfer case.
Remove transfer case (it is heavy).
Remove centre console and boot.
Remove manual shifter and any wiring.
Undo bellhousing bolts (you will need a selection of long extensions and might have to lift the engine, remove the engine mounts and drop the engine down to access the top ones).
Remove the gearbox (which will also be heavy).
Obviously there are mounts, etc which will need to be removed and things to be supported while doing so.

cheers for that Big Jon, sounds rather simple, might even get motivated to rip it out today.

I took mine out tonight of an 88 RRC. Took approx 3.5 hours. I didn't disconnect the transfer case from the gear box because last time i took it out that way i found to too difficult to balance. If you leave the transfer case connected you can put a trolley jack under the gear box where the braces bolt the gearbox the to chassis rails. (You will need 2 bits of timber to balance it on the jack approx. 100mm wide X 200mm long X30mm thick) I also use a tie down strap to hold the gearbox and transfer case in place on the trolley jack. I find this the easiest way.
Also i didn't drain the oil from the TC or gear box. It might be a good idea though, less mess and lighter as you will need to turn the gear box and TC on their side to get them out from under the car. Unless of course you have the luxury of a hoist.
I found i didn't need to drop the engine to undo the bell housing bolts. Just needed long ext and med ext with a unijoint bit in the middle. You will also need to drop the cross member. I also removed my exhaust.
By the way the bolts holding the prop shafts in on my RRC were rounded but were 9/16 not 14mm bolts. Just a tip.
When you get the gear box out the engine will tilt backwards. When refitting it is much easier to if you prop the engine up a bit with a jack. This will take the load off the gearbox shaft and also give you an adjustment to assist lining the shaft up correctly.
Good luck!
