    RRC Differences

    Hi all,

I'm on the lookout for a classic rangie in SA, after looking at a couple I'm hoping someone can help me out deciphering if there were any changes between 1989 - 1993. From what I have seen the interiors and exteriors look the same, however as I'm yet to develop my trained eye, I'm sure there are subtlies that I'm not seeing, so please hit me with them.

Also I would like to get the model variants in the right order.. So far I seen:

    Hi line

Can someone put them in the right order for me and explain the differences between them?

Finally, can someone confirm that Australian delivered ranges never came with a Diesel engine?
If this is the case the ones I have seen must have been converted here? Will a TDi 300 fit neatly into a rangie.

Heaps of questions I know, but it all you gurus out there could have a crack at them that would be appreciated.

    Cheers
    Dale

There was a vm deisel fitted as standard around 88, there are a few conversions to 200tdi/300tdi but I don't think they were from factory to Australia in this format.

89/90 was about the change over from 3.5 to 3.9 - the type of injection system changed, the instrument binnacle also changed. Front door hinges became concealed around then also.

From 89 they had the viscous coupling - I think I'd avoid that if I could.

Easy to swap out for a CDL case out of a D1 if you need to. Mind you a working viscous transfer is fine so long as you don't abuse it.

Very nice Baggy. Yes I'm not sure I can explain why I like the rangies so much, there is just something about them. I know that when I do find the right one, it also will be a 'work in progress' spending as much time in the shed pulled apart as it does on the road. But that is just part of the fun and frustration!

Keep away from non-working Borg Warner Viscious Coupling transfer cases. - Unless you only want a road-runner, in which case you have the choice of Front or Rear-wheel drive.- Remove the appropriate drive-shaft! (I'm being cynical...)

Seriously, the WABCO braking systemon the later ones, 93 to 95 (?) is a lot more to fix/replace than the 'normal' vacuum boosed one, and IMHO offers nothing extra apart from ABS and 'traction control' on the rear axle only.
Look in the engine room for the large, obvious, vacuum unit behind a normal-looking brake master cylinder...

On gravel ABS can be a mixed bag, and a self-locking etc diff front and rear is just as good or better, so I'm told.

The very early 'hard dash' had terrible instrument lighting. - They may as well not have bothered...

My '95 with the full 'soft-dash' has a smaller diameter, air-bagged steering wheel than the non-SRS model. Only an inch or so, but makes a differance in feel and effort. I'm still not happy with mine, something that only surfaces after driving it for longer periods...and remembering the 'feel' of a previous truck (old Pajero) that was so much easier over the same roads...

I'd avoid or at least not get excited over a sun-roof, unless you're addicted to the concept. RR don't do them as well as the Opposition. Too fragile, too small, a bit noisy and worst of all, lowers the already low ceiling. Not a problem if you're 'vertically compact' and/or follically challenged. It's an add-on and it feels like it.

Older Rangies had one of those old-fashioned chromed radio aerials on the front fender. Better idea than the printed on glass (later) failure... Besides, we only got one antenna, (RH rear side window) the Yanks got two.

RR V8s does not take kindly to being overheated. Ever. The 3.9 less than the 3.5. Lots of info here regarding cures and costs !

Fabric seats don't give anything away to 'leather'. Cheaper to re-do, and nicer in hot weather... Leather seats don't tolerate our harsh sunlight/heat.

But they are nice to drive...

10 to 24 spline axles somewhere between 89 and 93. Might be worth checking that out if you want to put big tires on it and go up bush.
