    Won't start when hot

So my 87 rangie starts fine but when it gets hot and is turned of it won't start again. I have a stupid stinger alarm system that has valet mode but it's not that as it lights up if on. I'm stuffed as to what it can be as the lights come on but won't even wind over. If I wait a bit and let it cool it's all good and will restart and drive. Any ideas???

Does it sound like the stater motor is "clicking" the solenoid in?
Sounds a little like the starter solenoid isn't working when it's got radiant heat on it.
Check the little terminal is tight while doing the usual cleaning of the battery terminals and earth straps for non starters.
You may have to jump this terminal to isolate if it's starter or wiring related.
    Cheers, Kyle

As for the question when you turn key it does all the right things except turn over there is a click but nothing. My ford does a similar thing and it's just a matter of playing with a wire on the solenoid. I got under and it was choke full of gunk so gave it a clean. The heat guard was in the way so did what I could without removing it.

Dan, just out of curiosity if you are able to add a earth strap from the chassis to the bell housing or one of the starter motor bolts.

I had a couple on intermittent issues with my rangie earthing thought the handbrake cable. So with the handbrake cable removed the car would not start.

I added another earth and have not had any problems since. Not a recommended fix but may give some ideas on the issue should it resolve it.

My 87 already has an extra earth strap between the lower starter bolt and earthed to the chassis down near where the wires run for the brake sensors in the rear wheels.

Mine looked pretty factory, braided cable, with a single-roll-over crimp made of heavy duty steel.

However I've just replaced my starter (for $159 on eBay with 5yr warranty, in case you're looking at replacing) and replaced the big 3, so my setup's a little different now.

Don't believe Jeremy came with an inhibitor switch on the hand brake, can start with or without hand brake on.

Easy test for solenoid, get someone to try turning the engine over (in neutral, hand brake on, or pull the HT lead from the coil so it can't start) and while the key is being turned, lightly tap the starter and solenoid, if it bites, replace the solenoid / starter

my 94 classic was doing this and as part of fault finding I set up a direct start circuit from the battery to eliminate all the electric nannys, stopped to take some pics on a run and no start pushed button under bonnet, direct via fuse battery to starter and still no sound not even a click. decided to change the stater simply because I had already got a new one and couldn't believe the speed difference and sound change during cranking. my conclusion is that shaft or bearings were worn and bendex was worn allowing the starter to jam in preference to spinning. hope this helps.

yeah i thought i fixed mine but after a run yesterday i pulled up and when i went to restart i go nothing. it also does even click. so i jumped underneath and the engine was hot but not searing however the starter was hotter than the engine. if i let it cool it will start fine again. im thinking of pulling it out and cleaning it and even wrapping it in heatproof to see if it helps as the heat could be coming off the engine. next step is new starter.

on another note there is a bit of oil in the area also
