    Fitting D1 wheels to a 74 RR?

My 74 RR came with rims that have been widened and I want to put some ordinary ones back on. I have a set of alloys from a 99 Disco and another from a 94 Disco, but they don't seem to bolt on.

Am I supposed to fit some kind of spacer? I keep reading ads that talk about D1 rims to suit Range Rovers, so what is the story? Did the early RRs have different hubs or something?

    Thanks, Erik

    Two issues may arise.

The bore in the wheel isn't big enough for the older half shafts and the studs may be too short.

I recall reading that studs intended for alloys had a mark pressed into to outer end - a triangle or an I (pic from the Expedition Exchange website).

I think you'll find several posts on the forum about fitting them to older Rangies and 110s.

However, this web page may help: http://lewiscollard.com/land-rover/wheel-compatibility/

The axle ends of a 74 are too big to allow the wheels to go on far enough to be bolted on.

The fix is to grind the axle ends down a bit with an angle grinder so that they are the same size as the hub that they bolt onto.

I had to do this when I fitted D1 steel wheels to a 77.

The stud lengths were not an issue fitting D1 steels.

Thanks Ron, that page explains it. Obviously the very early 2 doors are different from the later ones and the D1 alloys will fit the later 2 doors, but not mine.
