Im curious as well as about to tackle this myself, as well as looking at an electric window kit if anyone has advice on the generic ebay winder kits
Hi everyone,
Has anyone retro-fitted central locking into an early 2 door RRC? I've got a 75 2 Door and due to various reasons would like to install a central locking kit in it.
I've got a 4 door remote kit and wiring it up etc. is no problems, mainly after some advice as to where I can mount the actuators. There's not a lot of space between the inner skin and the window so it looks like it'll be a tight fit wherever I manage to put it.
Anyone got piccies or pointers on where they've mounted the actuators?
Cheers,
Steve

Hi Steve,
My 81 2 Door classic has retro fitted central locking kit.
It was fitted by previous owner....he's done a geat job and they work really well
Unfortunately I'm away from tomorrow and will be back on Sunday afternoon...... I can pull off a door panel and take some photo's of how they are fitted.
Cheers

A bit of an update for you all,
I'm most of the way through the process of installing the central locking in the 2 door. So far so good, here's a couple of photos of the install.
There's not a lot of room inside the door due to the glass being very close to the inner skin so I figured I'd mount the actuator under the quarter light and actuate the normal locking rod. Anyways, pictures probably describe it better.
First, widened out the locking rod slot in order to accommodate the actuator rod.
Before:
After:
This also shows the new gold rod to the actuator mounted in the newly drilled hole through the lock lever.
The actuator is mounted over the triangular plate under the quarter light, the view looking down the window channel;
And mounted with the 2 gold screws shown in this "almost completed" piccie
The rod sits snugly behind the winder mechanism and has enough strength to operate both ways without fouling on anything. Also, yes I know the door handle is on upside down, it was just on there to test.
Hopefully it works reliably for many years, I'd still be interested to see how others have done it if possible.
Cheers,
Steve
Noice work! Nice cutting of the hole too!![]()
Hi Steve,
Sorry for delay but been away with work longer than anticipated.
You've hit it on the money as that's how my central locking is installed
Here's a photo the only diffrence is the previous owner drilled a hole in side of door panel rather than cut out a hole to allow rod to join through to original door locking rod.
I've owner my RRC for 10 years and the central locking was only installed prior to my purchase .....touch wood it's still going strong and makes life so much easier.
You will notice it has a lot of grease smeared around as the only issue I've had is when fitting back of door panel, the panel itself puts pressure on rod and can stop its movement ....
I"ve deliberately not clipped the panel tight in the lower section because of this and liberally applied grease along the whole rod.
The 2 Door classic style so deserves central locking
Cheers

Thanks Baggy,
It's definitely encouraging to know I'm on the right track as a system that's functioned reliably for so long. Now I've just got the rest of the old girl to tidy up as I go.
Cheers,
Steve
Can't you reach both doors from the drivers seatI think half the appeal of the early models is they don't have all that crap to break ( ie: power windows, locking etc). I'm lucky, my classic has manual windows. Bloody thing has central locking though ...
It always works ... "sort of". Your never sure if the doors are all locked without checking though. Often you have to locked/unluck all the doors twice to be sure there all unlocked too. At least if the doors don't have central locking, you can be sure if there locked/unlocked

Hi Shane
Basic add on's on a RRC 2 door is central locking and and electronic ignition.
Setting points are a painful ...and just a pressing button to unlock
and open doors just improves the overall experience.
Of course then there's fixing the saggy bum ( done that)
Wheels/Tyres and improving power on 3.5 v8......engine over hall plus
Supercharger on my wish list.
I do like to follow the KISS principle on most things
Cheers
