Electric seat switch needed for RWC

The drivers memory seat switch is stuffed on mine. Its all in pieces, with a few bits missing. I need to get a new one for the RWC as the mirrors also don't work.

Is there a way around this, or will I have to fork out the 600 or so to get one from the UK. cant find one anywhere in VIc, not even a smashed one to use as a donor.

If I put disco seats in, is there a way I can get the mirrors to function without the seat switches?

I have also heard of people using rocker switches from jaycar, but not too sure how this is done.

Any advice would be great, thanks.

Where did I see that a Mercedes seat switch is the same?

    Try Googling that.

It could have been on http://rangerovers.net

    Seat Switches, Electric
One of the most common Range Rover annoyances is sticky or malfunctioning power seat switches. The 6-way switches in question, costing about $125 each, are borrowed from Mercedes, and indeed usable replacements can be obtained in a pinch from Mercedes dealers. (Michael Slade reports they are identical to the ones used on his '87 300TD, so one solution is to see if you can get them less expensively from Mercedes suppliers)

I see you are in Melbourne too.
Go to a place on Dorset Rd, Ferntree Gully, (the Marque backwards)
(cryptic clue)get yourself a second hand one.
Or ask someone on Ebay who is wrecking one of the Beasts......
Why buy a new one? Especially at that price.

Yes, the Merc ones will fit, wider range of models too... some have powered headrests... Also, MB mount them on the door card, so a LH one from a Merc goes to the RH Classic.- You'll see when you compare with your knackered one.
Good news is, located up there they suffer less abuse and dirt entry.

Bad news is, the switch mechanicals are not as robust as they might be, and the particular design is not efficient from a leverage point of view.

In short, they are exactly what they look like.... something designed for another location but hastily tacked on as an afterthought with no fore-thought.
I've seen a modified switch-set installed in the front face under the front seat.

Just to add to your woes, the non-working mirrors may be a result of the Power-seat ECU's circuit board being damaged by a leaking memory battery. This is located - literally - under the driver's seat. At least it is on my '95 Classic.

Successfully conquering faults always gives One that inner glow of 'accomplishment'.... owning a Classic will be a source of endless pleasure !

Thanks for all the advice. Ebay have a few for old Mercs, I might just rip the innards out of them and see if I can make one up. I still havnt found which model yet has them to ask a wrecker, but looks more promising than a RR one.

The guys in dorset road don't have any either, but they are awesome blokes, very very helpful so far.

And the seat ECU......will be looking at that very soon too me thinks! that battery leak is a nightmare!

I bought my battery (on evilbay) from England, but that particular supplier no longer lists them.

This might be the next best thing...

Have a look at the type of bolts holding your seat in... On the softdash the front and rears are.....diFferANt heads. - Special oDD ones on the rear. No, I've no logical explanation.....

well, I got a new seat switch, rebuilt it all, so its now supposed to work......but it doesn't.

Pulled out the ECU, and yes a slight leak from the battery. put in a make shift one from jaycar, it has only two positive poles, but thought it might work still. Did a bit of clean up, still no work. I get power at the relays on the circuit board, but still no seat or mirrors.
The two long black things just below the battery, I get power there as well, and a few other places on the board.

Killing me and costing me lots.

Guess I need to pull it out and try cleaning again, maybe I missed something....

DOes the merc have the same ECU by any chance?

Have you got power at the Mirror or Seat? As in, right at the motors?
    Fuses?
    Earths?

Havnt tried to see if there is power at the motors yet. Figured that there would only be power if it was working.

You have'nt got the RAVE disk, have you....?

Visit the Ye Olde Land Rover Shoppe here, spend a few shekels... will be well worth it.

From memory, it's secions M3 and M5 in the 'Electrical Troubleshooting' section.

It will walk you through step by step, and really, it's the only way to start solving problems. Apart from the enforced logical approach, everyone else on here has access to RAVE and we can follow you through with advice and smarty-pants comments as required !

Two suggestions - print out the bit you're working on, write on it what you did/when you did/ results and how you fixed it. File it in a Big Fat folder which you'll soon fill up.

Second one is, follow the proceedures exactly as described. If, for example, if you're checking a component, assume it will be in place, NOT removed to make it easier to get the test leads on. - Unless it specifically tells you to take it out.
Ask me why when you get around to doing your Cruise Control...

Edit:- Yes, I know-I know...'Real Men don't need the Instructions'..... but since the few Women on here won't tell, - your secret is safe with us.
