Yep, reckon you're correct. I'd hazard a guess that the viscous fan is doing it's normal thing, - re-distributing the magic stuff for the first minute or whatever. Then the fluid settles and fan slows down to socially accpetable.
Efficient fan blades + close cowling + congested engine room + high-ish idle speed = Lotsa roaring wind noise and Worried Owner....
From memory, the son of satan parks itself in the open position at shutdown and therefore your start-up will be at a high idle, which the engine ECU quickly modifies to a more civilised RPM.
Any arthritis, gumminess or excess wear in the stepper valve thingy and it's response can be erratic and/or sluggish. There is a method of cleaning them, - I just unscrewed and hosed it out with carby cleaner, WD40, and descriptive language.
Remember that it's made from thin, die-cast alloy so be Nice to it !
Mine had tantrums for a few months, but now it only 'bites' my son when he drives Sarah...

There is supposed to be an earth-strap on the rear RH side of the 3.9 engine. Mine was waving in the breeze when I bought the car, hence the welding cable from alternator to battery. I don't have much faith in the bodywork being a good enough earth-return...

The roar doesn't worry me.
If the engine rpms are high (as usual) on startup the car will be driveable. It now sometimes bogs down straight away i.e. no roar from engine or fan.
Stepper, MAF, IAM are all new.
Jazzman, it's possible. Will check the earths anyway and see what happens.

... Vacuum advance on the dizzy working ok ? Pull the hose off the manifold and suck it and see.
(A) it should hold the vacuum without bleeding down, and (
will alter the timing and therefore the RPM.

Figured out the problem. While the stepper was new and clean, it was loose so air was probably bypassing it. All fine now.
Although I also fixed a broken earth so, who knows.
