    V8 Radiator Replacement Options

I had a lovely, British-made, brand-new "heavy duty" tropical core blah blah blah etc. radiator in my '83. So I thought it would be perfect for up here. I've just found out that it has been the main culprit behind the overheating problems I've had for years. My fault, I suppose - I should have put the old one back in to check. The problem is that there aren't enough tubes in each row, so the old one, with more tubes, has made a huge difference. I might add that the rest of the system, including the engine, is all new.

The Australian company I got it from hasn't exactly been speedy in helping with a refund or otherwise, (big surprise there again), so I'm looking around for another new radiator.

Are the later Rangie and Disco I rads - the ones with the two lower pegs near the middle - that easy to fit? I found one reference to it here somewhere, but it sounds like the crankhandle won't fit underneath. (I could probably weld a bit of half-pipe into the crossmember, though.)

What I do know is that I need the biggest capacity available. That makes all the difference with these engines in a hot climate.

I'm running what i think is a disco 1 radiator. It bolted straight into my 88RRC. The only trouble I've had is fitting the shroud from the original radiator as the disco shroud won't fit, it is like the fan is meant to be off centre in the disco 1. I'm thinking it is a diesel radiator maybe. Anyway it is important to have a shroud as it adds approx. 30% efficiency to your cooling.

Have you fitted a new viscos cuppling to your fan. It made a huge difference for me. My engine now roars when it gets warm. Is your fan roaring when its warm?

Thanks, I completely forgot about that little detail. I actually have a different viscous unit setup to the original, so the fan is further away from the radiator than it's supposed to be. I guess I'd need an adaptor to mount the shroud onto.

And yup, everything is new . . . except the radiator!

Possibly an EL falcon? I've used the twin thermo fans off an EL in my old 2 door to replace the original engine driven fan , and the fans bolted straight in with minimal fuss or customisation so it appears that the RRC rad is similar in size to the falcon.

I'm planning on looking at putting a falcon radiator in mine in the future but haven't done the necessary research/measuring etc.

If it does fit it would definitely be worth looking in to. My theory is that it's designed to cool a 4.2L straight 6 motor with air con in the Australian heat, given how common they are, if they were prone to overheating I'm sure we would've heard about it. They also should be easy to find all around Australia and be nice and cheap.

    Just my 2 cents anyways.

    Cheers,
    Steve

Jeeeezuz, I paid $600 for a faulty Pommy radiator and look what you can get for a Falcon: NEW Heavy Duty Copper Core Radiator FOR Ford Falcon Fairmont EF EL 6CYL V8 | eBay

And it's supposed to cool a 5-litre V8. Is there something I'm missing here???

YES, there is... but "they" certainly didn't miss you !!!

I have a certain philosophy...that a defective LR part must always be replaced with a better, longer-lived and better designed 'foreign' part, wherever practical/convenient and possible.
In many cases the oriental replacement will be cheaper in the long run.

Like a Falcon radiator and a couple of external oil coolers.

I'm with you there, James, just so long as the conversion isn't too hard and doesn't make things worse. In this case, I didn't mind paying pretty much the going rate for an all-copper radiator, it's the little matter of it not working that I do mind.

I might just take the leap and use a plastic-and-ally rad after all!
