Hi All,
Been tightening up the exhaust manifold bolts and I've noticed that some bolts wont tighten...I think they may be stripped or worst case broken - although they havent fallen out yet.
Is this a usual occurance ....and if the studs are broken how easy are they to remove.
I'm thinking that once the exhaust manifolds off ....if some bolts are broken then there will still be a bit of bolt still visible that vice grips can still clamp on to and remove......positive thinking
Suggestions please on best penitrating fluid to soak bolts prior to their removal and is their some merit in starting engine because of aluminium expanding compared to steel bolt.
Also where's the best place to get replacements (exhaust manifold bolts) in Perth or is the internet your best friend.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers
Baggy

Baggy,
I can feel your pain, broken exhaust stud the home mechanics nightmare. If youre lucky you can get them out with the vice grips. Other wise drill them internally and use an eazy out, don't break the bas...d, otherwise you'll know true pain. Do the rangies have a history of breaking the exhaust bolts? if they do it might be worth taking extra time to source very high quality studs.
If it's possible to make the studs longer by 10 mm you should, and put spacers under the nuts. Longer studs are more resilient & less prone to breaking
Should be plenty of good bolt places in Perth or go to a landrover specialist they can get the studs for you. Tough luck if you have to helicoil them it's difficult on a V 8. Buy the best studs you can find, they should be grade 8.8 or similar, 316 SS is Ok as well. ( its better if you don't use SS nuts on SS studs )
See if you can get a tube of nickle based antisieze, moly coat or copper coat if you have to, at repco or similar.
when you get the studs in and a new gasket fitted, put the antisieze on the studs and reduce the recommended tightening torque buy 10%. Don't do them up too tight. After you drive for a few days loosen them off 1/2 a turn and do them up again to the same toque as you did 1st time. ( engine cold) good luck.
G`day ,
If they turn and don`t fall out they`re probably stripped .
If you undo and remove the suss bolts and look at the threads , if you see a whole bolt and bits of alloy on the thread then you know it has taken the thread .
If you put a smaller probe into the hole and measure the distance you may be able to fit a slightly longer bolt and use the thread that is left deeper in the hole but the longer bolt need to not have a capacity to bottom out .
From your other reply i see you have a manual if you look at page 12-22 it will give you info about the threads and bolts .
save the heartache take it to an exhaust shop get them to do the hard work. also soak the studs on CLR or similar for a few days before trying to loosen.
