I have used UNC before. With a lock nut it was fine for me.

The only thing to watch out for is that, with the coarser thread, they'll loosen up more easily, but so long as you keep an eye on them you should be fine. UNF is used because it clamps better, but the Rover V8 is covered in UNC threads since that's what they had to use in ally, and it's usually fine.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

    bolts

If you have to you can use metric but try to use bolts of a good grade. As davo said becareful with them undoing, check them at the end of each day. UNC can vibrate loose, best to use locktite on them. Replace them with the correct bolt as soon as you can.
