    rear diff.

    hi, i just want to ask if i can replace the rear diff on my 78 range rover with a good spare front one that i have, r they interchangeable, standard range rover diffs, ok thanks.

    According to my parts catalogue, the front are rear diffs and the diff housings are the same on any given vehicle.

    thanks for confirming that, i kinda always thought they were the same, i do have a rear diff also still on my spare range rover but i have a good front one already removed, ok thanks,

    They are the same. This is why front rover diffs often brake. The rear diff gears are winding inward forcing them together, when you put the same diff in the front they wind outward forcing them apart.

    It is possible to get reverse cut gears for the front to they drive the correct direction but wind inward like the rear diff does.

    Maxi drive diffs for example.
