    Exhaust systems

I'm sure it's been discussed, but can't find a thread.

My mufflers are shot, so in for a penny, in for a pound, I'm looking for a full system replacement. I've been quoted $1500 for a 2.5" system, including extractors, which sounds reasonsble(?).

My question is 2.5" the right upgrade size? Love the sound of the V8, but don't want to block out conversation while cruising.

2.5" is a good size. If you are worried about a droning sound it is a muffler that you need.

I'm running Ginnie extractors with a 2.5" system from the extractors back. I have a Turbo muffler in the centre and the standard muffler at the rear. It runs great and sound great. But it is not loud and does not drone.

2.5" is fine but that price sounds high!

Extractors should be less than $500/pr (e.g. Performance car parts online | air flow meters, headers, extractors, disc brake rotors, cai cold air intakes, exhaust systems, gauge holders, throttle bodies, high flow filters, shock absorbers, ignition lead sets - Genie Range Rover Landrover 110 3.5Ltr Ext )

The rest of the exhaust and extractor install shouldn't cost more than $500.

I use Hans-on-Exhausts all the way down at kenwick, but he does good work and is cheap.

About 10 years ago I used the full H&M extractor system on my 84 carb phase 11 with a 2.5" system and hot dog at the back, lost heaps of torque for towing off from idle up to about 1200 rpm. Sounds great but the small gains in fuel economy on the highway do not add up for the torque loss on mine. People are impressed though so what can I say.

I had my disco exhaust replaced from the Y junction back in 2.5" for $350. Extractors if you really need them shouldn't be that much extra.

This is why it is important to keep the centre muffler. You loose too mucg back pressure otherwise and this happens.

No I still had a centre muffler just free flow. So be careful.

By free flow are you referring to a performance muffler with less turns inside it. I have not experienced what you have but my centre muffler is a turbo muffler. The exhaust pipe goes diagonally through the muffler in an attempt to not restrict flow too much.

The other difference is mine is a 3.5lt EFI and has a muffler at the end rather than a hotdog. Maybe it doesn't effect the EFI as much?

Yes my centre muffler war a Lukey high performance. The drop of in torque was a real hassle.

I can imagine, any torque loss from the 3.5lt is costly. Mine is also Lukey. I can only guess the EFI running 9DBTDC might be the difference. Or maybe i'm just lucky. Come to think of it, I also have a different cam with 2mm more lift on the valve side than standard that is probably helping too.
