Unbolt the drag link and steering link. See what turns freely and what doesn't.
89 RRC Auto; My steering is very stiff across the lock no obvious worse spots, its just very stiff and does not self centre. I have searched this forum and think it could be the uni joints on the shaft. I have soaked them in WD 40 and oil to see if it will make any difference but it hasn't. I have just bought the car and so have no idea how long this has been an issue, Is there an easy way to diagnose the problem? There is nothing obvious to see. I hope its the PS pump as I have a new one at hand, but don't want to change it unless I need too. Ideas anyone?

If it's a seized joint I've had good success with freeing them. Immerse the joint in a tin of oil on a stove, heat the oil to around 120C and let it cool overnight. Make sure you do this outside over bare dirt and don't spill the oil on the flame!
Wow! sounds like I may need to get the camping stove out! Is this the most likely cause in your opinion? The issue is exactly the same regardless of engine RPMs which suggests to me that it could be... If it is I am inclined to spend the $70 bucks ish to buy new joints, your idea is more fun though![]()
certainly not notchy, maybe the pump? Also I did a search on evilbay recently (as you do!) and the Ujs are available, probably aftermarket as you suggest but none the less available.

Looks like a process of elimination...
Start with the steering damper, go for a drive... No better?
Ok, put the front axle onto jack stands... undo the links to the LH wheel,,, then the RH wheel... then .... You get the picture.
Or you could start by isolating the steering column shaft from the steering box... but whichever end you attack, the problem will be at the other end. Murphy's Law.
Whilst you're at it, may as well check the swivel hubs (RAVE is indeed your friend) and the wheel bearings. Maybe even change them as a precautionary item ?
Don't forget the brake pads... have a look...rotors too, now that you've got the wheels off.
Seeing as you've got good access now, it would be a shame to pass up the chance to bleed your brakes, - no-one ever does it annually...get fresh fluid through the lines. At least the front ones...
Oh, and by the way, get plenty of rags and wipe everything in sight... lots of oil everywhere (its a Range Rover...) and cheaper than degreasing fluid.
- Less mess as well.
Remind me, why were you crawling underneath your car ? Never mind, you're going to end up a fine mechanic in 'no time'...
LOL Thank you for that! I have decided that given it's the steering, I am going to take it to a garage, get it checked out properly. I used to love getting down and dirty with a tool kit, but these days it is just hard work. over 50 syndrome!I have an exhaust leak at the engine (extractors) so they can do that too while they have it on a hoist.
Wuss......

Your steering damper shoulda.so be checked as should the tie rods....if you have just bought it cheap insurance and be proactive.
