How is the air gap in the dizzy? I had issues with mine when the gap was too close. I had the same issue with the vacuum advance on the dizzy after I swapped one as well. I swapped the module to the original dizzy, put it back in and it clears everything.

I've also just fixed a connection problem on the injection harness that caused #2 injector to stop firing intermittently.

After cranking, pull a plug to see if it's wet or dry.

You can check power on the back of the plug to the resistor pack, make sure all pins have power with the ignition on. This tells you the pack is fine. (The plug has to be connected to the resistor pack).

The ECU earths the injectors to fire them, if you use a test light and bridge the pins on an injector plug it will flash while cranking. If it doesn't, it could be the ECU.

Easiest way to tell if the ECU is fine is if the spark plug is wet after cranking though.

The flapper is a fairly basic system, only let down by Lucas components (apparently). I have had a resistor pack drop a cylinder, the amplifier (or ignition module) on the dizzy pack it in and the odd connection go corroded in the plugs.

Your compression sounds good, the other two things to check are only spark and fuel.

And then there's the EFI system's earth lug that bolts to the back of the LH head. Find it, clean it and reattach it to the top of the manifold where you can see it.

I bought an ECU, two tail lights and the resistor pack for $20 about year and a half ago.

    Agreed

I have haltec on my current 4.6 89 rangie, bought a megaquirt coil pack and mount kit, dizzy bung and leads, no normal coil, no dizzy, no water problems, reliable.

If you dont have aftermarket engine management megaquirt ecu it with the coil pack kit

Thanks for all the replies so far, everyone!

Most components on the motor I can only assume are either original or have not been replaced or checked for a very long time, which makes it quite a pain in the arse to narrow down possible culprits! The previous owner loved the car but had a 'just keep it going' attitude, I think. The dizzy and ignition module I have swapped in is relatively new, it doesn't have a brand or number on it but it does have a Lucas advance (also looks new) and the guts of the dizzy look immaculate, the rotor I put in is brand new OEM. I have previously had plugs out after cranking for awhile and they do seem a bit dry if I remember correctly. I have the CSI connected and know that it was getting fuel to it, I have not touched the thermotime switch though.

I will check the ECU pin first, the ECU earth on the head, the injector plugs, then the air gap in the dizzy. I will try another new set of plugs after that and see what they look like after cranking (if it is still not running). I have heard of soldering problems inside the ECU before but how common is it?

The most annoying thing with the problems that are occurring is that the parts car we have available had also started to develop very similar symptoms. Though I did manage to get that car working for a few months simply by changing the leads, getting new spark plugs and regularly cleaning them.

I may be able to borrow a working ECU closer to me but I will let you know, thanks Brad!

I will update if I discover anything new but sadly I am doing the best I can by myself with very limited knowledge/experience with EFI. So I am extremely grateful for any and all help I am able to get from you all!
