    No rear drive from LT95

    G'Day Guys N' Gals

Not long ago while going out for a nice lunch with my wife there was a great bang from under the Rangie, we managed to roll into a bus stop out of the traffic.

When I look under the Rangie I expected a prop shaft to be in two pieces ... I was wrong, I engaged 1st gear made sure that High was selected ... no movement, tried low range and all the gears ... no movement, I then left it in 1st/High and looked underneath, the front prop shaft was spinning and the rear was still.

After I engaged the diff lock we drove home slowly using only front wheel drive without any problems or grinding noises ... not that you can hear a lot of noises over the 4BD1-T.

The thunderstorms and rain that have been giving us a pounding as well as work have made it a slow job to get the back cover off and remove the transfer case differential (no garage or carport), I finally managed to get things apart this afternoon, the oil had no extra bits of metal etc in it.

To avoid confusion my transfer case diff lock, I think it is also referred to as the 3rd Diff looks like this one.

How do I test it out of the box, or am I blaming the wrong part!

    Cheers

Given the above I would say the opposite - you have an issue with the front drive - maybe in the diff - not sure.

To me this would explain the rear not turning and the front spinning (no load on the front) and then getting drive back when the cdl was locked.

Jack the car up at the front and lock the front drive shaft and see if you have full diff action - when you turn one front wheel clockwise the other should turn anti clockwise - if that works then with the front drive shaft locked and one front wheel locked then the other wheel should not turn - if it does you have a front end issue.

If there is no issue then back to your idea of something more sinister in the Tfr case is amiss.

Obviously with the rear wheels off the ground are you getting drive to the rear with the CDL off (handbrake off).

You need to determine where you have drive and where you do not.

If we return early enough from work Tomorrow I'll jack up the front end and take the front axle for a spin.

Problem found, the left CV is cactus ... Picking up parts, seals, gaskets and bearings Tomorrow, I've decided to replace both sides including the swivel seals.

While you have the centre diff out check/replace the shims on the planetary gears and this will reduce some of the slop in the driveline.

Replaced the shims, seals and bearings when we did the engine/gearbox conversion, hasn't had an issue since other than the rear seal leaking into the handbrake 12 months ago.

    Cheers
