    Long range fuel tanks - 1991/2 RRC

    Guys,

    Searching the forums hasn't revealed much on the subject of long range tanks for RRC.

    I have emailed Brown Davis about a 120L tank, - apprently there are 2 models. I'm not sure exactly what the difference is.

    Are there any other suppliers making tanks for RRC's? I'd really like to have a decent capacity - around 120-140L .

    Ideas / advice appreciated.

    The difference is that around then RRCs went from a steel fuel tank with a low mounted filler to a plastic fuel tank and high mounted filler (same as Disco 1). Chassis mounts and fuel pump assemblies are different in the two tank types. 1991/2 should be the same as D1 but I'm not certain of the date when the tanks were changed.

    You know that if you poked it with your finger you'd have worked out its made of plastic. Anyways, it's the one that's the same as a d1.

    You know what Bee Utey??? I did just that while wiring up the trailer plug, after remembering your post... and yes, the tank is the plastic one, but oh boy..... you could almost be forgiven for thinking the tank was a metal one! it has a seam, just like the metal tanks do, but the fact that I had cleaned the underside with the pressure washer meant that everything was clean enough to determine that it was plastic.... I guess that if the undercarriage was filthy, one would be confused if they were not sure what to look for.

    but I had to do the double take to make sure - tapped it twice in 2 places, then looked at the texture near the seam. Also checked the Brown Davis website again.... no details on which of their tanks is the correct replacement for the plastic one. they simply list 4 tank models, based on the engine type and date range. Not entirely helpful I must say, and the guy I need to speak to is on holidays until the 12th... bugger.

    If you decide to go with a Brown Davis tank, check first how the fuel pump is retained. Ideally you'd like to stick with the current locking ring type.


    The tank they make for the P38 has a locking ring of their own design (so it seems) & it's not a great idea. Their design doesn't incorporate a neck like the genuine (and other long range) tank & the seal needs to be cut down & is prone to leakage.

    I was having a yarn to Stuart @ Graeme Coopers about this yesterday, while popping in for a set of engine mounts and a few other bits n pieces.

    He said the same thing about the mount for the brown davis tank, and suggested putting in a new pump or a swirl pot and pump for the outside.

    in any case, I will be talking to BD rep about the different tank types before I decide where to go - and at any rate nothing before their guys get back from holidays.... pity, as I would have liked to have it before heading interstate.
