Found some Rust... now what...

Yep,
it happens.
got rust in both front floorpans along the mastic join on the drivers side and in the kickpanel seam on the passengers.

No evidence of any rust on the other side (i.e. underside) so I'm wondering what is the best way to tackle this - aside from removing the floorpan?

The whole thing started after the rain we had last week. The RRC is parked outside on an incline, and when I got in on saturday, that dreaded musty smell was evident. I pulled the front mats and lifted that deadener mat, to find it completely soaked.

I used a knife to cut them out of both footwells, and found somethign I was not prepared for...

Will get a couple of pics in a minute.

Question is though....... where the bloody hell did the water get in?

I don't know enough about RRC's & water ingress, so I'm suspecting the windscreen seal or that wiper cowl or something where I cannot see rust. Any ideas? help appreciated. or better yet, someone in the wollongong area to do a rust repair, as I haven't got any space to do it here, and it's not a good idea to do it parked on the roadside.

If it's anything like mine, the water came in through the windscreen seal. Mine leaked like a sieve for a long time. I ripped all the carpets and underlay out when it started to smell bad. Mine only had surface rust and and a few pock marks forming, but no where was it rusted through the floor. After using a wire wheel to remove all the loose crap, I gave it a good coating of rust converter before coating the floor in brushable bitumen stuff. Finally I stuck some new soundproofing down, and I'll eventually put carpet over that.

I'm not saying that's the right way, just the way I did it.

Yep,

Windscreen seal. Haven't done mine yet and it needs a new screen so both will be done at the same time.

The join between the seal and body shell has to be perfectly done with sealant and the join between the seal and the screen needs to have the right sealant in it before the locking strip goes in.

Are aftermarket windscreen seals OK or are genuine ones the only way to go?

I've got a couple of tiny cracks in mine from stones, so it would seem as appropriate time as any to get replacement (it's covered by insurance anyway)

Go genuine with the seal. If you're replacing the seal, get a new screen.

In the appropriate conditions, my windscreen grows little areas of condensation along the bottom half, running the air-con on DEMIST fixes them.

Oh yes, did I mention that my side of the floor, at the bend of floor/rising behind the pedals is rusted out ?

NO leak from heater pipes as they're disconnected inside the Engine Room... so it most likely is windscreen-seal.

My water leak was through the LH firewall plate (where the LHD pedal box would sit).

I didn't have water entry into the RH side though but my floor was rusted through there too - all I can assume was that it was affected by dirt/mud buildup, or it had a windscreen leak before my time with the car.
