    87 rangie where to start

I have had this rangie for a while now and it's showing the typical noises etc so I'm now deciding on where to start and any help to diagnose the problems

First it's a duel fuel and only runs on gas as wiring is faulty which I'm getting that looked at. Plus it needs a tune

Next is going into second is hard and most time is a touch grindy but the rest aren't to bad is that due to synchro. Clutch or gearbox

Next rear prop shaft has play at the diff end so thinking that's pinion bearing

Also being an 87 what should it have in regards to motor gearbox transfer etc more info the better

    Thanks
    E

Would have thought it should have an injected 3.5 with an LT230 transfer and LT77 (short stick) gearbox originally.

Yeah sounds right however the engine is a 3.9 apparently from a 93 model but how do I tell

Engine number prefix on the block. LHS just below the 2nd & 3rd plugs IIRC

Original motor should be a flapper type EFI 3.5 with LT77 gearbox and LT230 TC.

If all the other gears go in ok when you have the clutch in, I would guess a syncro is your second gear issue - if you pull it from 1st to second slowly while letting the revs drop, does it drop into gear easily at some point? This would confirm it.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

It's not a flapper. Will look for Numbers tomorrow. When going from 1st to 2nd it does as you say it you change to fast it grinds. But slowly it takes a bit then slips in. How do you fix synchro. Is it pull out gearbox out to fix

So probably best to change to an auto then. I have been told the old torque flight was the best one

I do not know much about the TF (727 ?). I think they are only 3 speed with no overdrive, but are a pretty tough unit.

Maybe get a complete (4sp) auto Disco and swap the bits over OR get a later (94-98) manual Disco with the R380 box ?.

Yeah could do that too as discos are pretty cheap.
