Upper RPM surging - under load

    Guys,
    got a relatively interesting one...

the RRC has developed a surge under load. Mostly at higher rpm's and @ WOT or between 2/3 and WOT.
Terrain is not important but obviously it is noticeable up an incline moreso than on a downhill.

Have checked the spark, and cap / leads / rotor are all serviceable. I have not done the bee-utey ignition module relocation yet. But I'm not sensing an ignition issue as there is no misfire in lower rpm and larger throttle openings.

Mostly the issue is prevalent in 3rd and 4th, especially if using kickdown. sometimes, whn holding the gear manually, the surge can occur at provocation of the throttle, but it is usually in the 3krpm+ and heavier loud pedal.

I'm wondering if it's likely to be a sign of fuel pump or pressure regulator failing.

Not sure if the fuel pressures are adjustable on the regulator or not.
I'm considering doing an overhaul, but think it may be an exercise in futility.

Any rover-specific internal v8 issues that could be cause (timing gear/chain or dizzy drive gear or something else extra-ordinary that I haven't considered)???

Would like the issue to be simply resolved. It's only been occurring in the last month or so, and is starting to be come more frequent.

Yes, I can replace the fuel filter, but the one on the car is not that old. <15K.

    any ideas appreciated.

Sounds to me like a fuel problem, mainly lack of. Could also be caused by blocked tank breather if the tank has one.
Try and locate a fuel pressure tester, if not put a bottle on the end of the fuel line and see how much comes out. It should be a lot....
    Good luck with it.

Could also be a TPS fault (throttle position switch). Do the ignition module upgrade anyway. My Lucas system was working fine, did the upgrade and gained torque with better economy.

I also noticed this morning a fuel-smell coming from the RH rear wheel well (near the filter)
There is no sign of evap or loss from the breather line... but it is raining and windy here so hard to be 100% perfectly sure.

I have the plastic tank in my 91, but have not lifted the floor to investigate fuel filler access panel etc.

I understand that an in-tank pump from a vn-vs dunny door is a direct replacement albeit reversed on the spade sizes.

Is there anything else I need to be aware of, should I wish to replace it over the weekend?
