Are the cheapo tyres about on ebay these days any good?

    Hi Guys,

When I purchased the old '92 Rangie I was amazed at how evenly all the tyres were worn... no scuffing, no edges chopped off etc............. Yeah within a short time, I'd destroyed the "round-a-bout" tyre just like I do on every car I've ever owned.... For some reason (one day I figure out why ). I always trash the outside edges of the front passenger side tyres.

I'm not into the latest fashions, don't want or need 37" mud tires, or 10" spring and body lifts, I also have no intention of fitting HID headlights, LED valve caps, or pretty shiny fashion lights or windscreen washer lights.

Given this I'm only really interested in the tyres sized that'll work perfectly for 99.99999999999999999999% of the vehicles use ( ). ie: 205R16 cheese cutters, 215/75 16 or 225/70 16 (to keep the gearing right, the gearing is already plenty high enough given the slugomatic gearbox fitted).

Checkout the prices you can get tyres for these day. This looks like quite a good tread pattern that'll allow me to drive through most offroad stuff I'd need to get through, yet not howl like a bastard and handle like crap onroad Has anyone tried these super cheap chinese made tyres

How can they even make a new tyre and ship it to Australia for this sort of money?

I ended up acquiring some Hankook Dynapro ATMs, 30x9.5 R15 and the only nit I can pick with them is the tread is the perfect size for gravel to get stuck in which then flings off or makes clicking sounds on bitumen until they fling off and hit the wheel well. They have a pretty aggressive tread but are quieter than Maxxis Bravo radials, they last forever, seem to be reasonably tough too!

For what they are and the price they are I'm not sure if there is anything better? $174 for a 205 R16 on Jax Tyres' website. I would certainly buy a set of them again over BFG ATs.

But no matter what, do you really want to skimp on tyres for a 1900kg 4WD?!

The photo of that tyre in the link from your first post just makes it look like a cheap, nasty and unsafe tyre. I would not buy one.

My 2c, which means I should probably send you 10c... :P

That's the sort of feedback I was after. Those hancooks look quite aggressive for all terrains. They look ideal. I know I probably should go for road tyres given I'll be mostly towing heavy loads, but road tyres suck so bad around here where it can get quite wet in winter.... You could almost get bogged on wet grass on road tyres if your not careful.

Interesting what you say about the cheap tyres. I've run cheapos on most of my cars for the last 10years, and have never failed to be impressed by them. They do however seem to "go off" more quickly than good brand name tires (ie: age deteriate more rapidly).

The rangie has cheap chinese tyres on it now by the looks of it .... I dont think I've ever heard of the brand name (I'll double check). There very bloody impressive for well aged, almost worn out road tyres. Impressively tractionless and fun in the sloppy stuff too LOL.

    Cheap tyres

There the Goodride tyres on that Rangie Dad sold to you, I've had a set on a D1 a few years ago when I was still in Brisbane. Did about 40K on them including when I drove the Disco down here when we moved and still had @ 7mm tread (they were near new when we bough the Disco). Sold it with them on no problems there.

Was surprised how good they were for a cheapo tyre, wouldn't expect miracles out of them but better than I thought they would be.
