Hey guys ive been trying to get into on my 88 classic 3.5 fuel tank/expansion tank and breathers. Unfortunately i dont have access to the Vehicle myself so im passing information on to my Brother who is a Patrol Nazi.
Anyway Background on my Rangey ... it has been idling low on Petrol and fine on LPG. When i adjust the petrol to idle fine the LPG Idles High. This has been on going for a couple of years.
Now today im told the there is petrol coming out the top of the tank and down the electrical connectors and petrol is coming out the filler. Over pressurizing the tank.
Ive tried searching for info on the tank and there seems to be 2 types of tanks. 1st one has 3 vents holes and well as filler hole and a return hole? The 2nd one doesn't look like it has the 3 holes. Are these different Tank types tied to year models? The 87 model in my workshop manual shows the 3 vents so i'm inclined to think that what my 88 has.
A simple google search reveals very little information on fuel expansion tanks that are hidden in the Drivers side rear wheel arch. Obviously im leaning towards the breathers being blocking and hoping and simple clean out will solve my woes.
Now my questions (as i cant check for myself and my Brother is doing me a favour spending his time on it)
1) Are different Tank types (with more vents) tied to year models?
2) Could over pressurization affect Idle & cause it to idle low?
3) Were 1988 models equipped with this Fuel expansion tank?
Dont know if this is any help, when i had my late 89rr i had a ton of trouble with the tank pressurising, after many hours pulling things apart to get to all the crap under the side window and not finding any thing wrong my problem turned out to be a small vaccuum hose going to the inlet manifold, the post was blocked and when cleared with a very small drill bit all problems were solved.
Also at a different time i had a blocked rocker cover vent[small one] that caused an erratic idle/hunting but the engine ran perfect when the oil cap was removed
The crap you refer to under the window is this the breather tank as pictured? If your 89 has it and the 87 in the manual has it safe to say my 88 has it and we can start here after trying your easier option first.
