    A little help

As I've been working on my 78 Range Rover (body is sitting 400mm above the chassis awaiting that last brave moment where I yank it out) i've been trying to do a fair bit of research but I still have a few unanswered questions and was wondering if you guys may be able to help.

In this year model are the a and b pillars colour coded? Engine bay and firewall are body colour. Atm they're both been painted black but small amount of polish reveals Sahara Dust and the black paint quality is terrible.

Are the bumpers supposed to be black or silver?

Is it suppose to have pollution gear on the air cleaner? didn't when I bought it and it was in very original condition.

I've owned the car for around 13 years and when I bought it it had good service history I've read through it and there is no sign of an engine swap. How can I tell if it's original? Chassis no. Is 356 number but engine is 355 as is gearbox and transfer.

All these questions would be easly answered if it were either 77 or 79 seems to be a changeover year. Build date is 6/78

    Hi Yeti,
my understanding is the bumpers and wipers changed to black for the 79/80 models so yours should be silver. As for the A and B pillars they should be body colour. Your engine number prefix 355 sounds right and the suffix letter should be same as chassis suffix probably E. If it is there is a good chance of it being original. I found the site linked below but haven't used it yet. You may be able to get some information from them. I believe that cars with anti-pollution gears have ADR 27a listed on the compliance plate. I compared the 77s I have here with a 79 and 82, with pollution gear, and ADR 27a is only on the later ones with the pollution gear. Nice to hear another Classic being looked after. Perhaps some pics if you get a chance.

Thanks Pete. I'll have a look at that website. You've seen my project it's just up the road from you. I'll drop those arb bars off for you in the next week or so. Will post picks once the chassis is out. What a job!

Got the chassis out after having to lift body quite high to clear the shock towers. (Not recommending lifting the body off as whole as I did, what a job!) ready to be cleaned. Then I'll sort out the gearbox leaks then the power steering leaks. She's also got worn pinion seals. Classic is in good order. Years of oil leaks have preserved her well. Also dug up the service history from 1978 to 99. Also found the original receipt showing the price and the matching engine number which makes me feel better. I'm the third own and it's done 236k. Lots of work ahead but looking forward to it.
