I thought they all had low compression engines ..... There is little point to putting high octane petrol in a low compression motor

If it had its standard few degrees of advance, or even 8 to 10 I would agree, but I can keep 2 degrees more advance on my 101 by using high octane petrol - particularly in Summer as I get some pre ignition happening under full load using standard stuff, and I loose some power if I back it off to where it is happy on 91. With the rate it drinks fuel, a few dollars extra a tankful is not worth worrying about for that that is though.![]()

.. I thought 12 degrees was the 'Standard' advance...

6 degrees BTDC is standard, but 10 is normal if you want it to run right, beyond 12 on mine I've found issues with pre ignition under high loads.
