    Classic Rangie Fuel Pump Location

    G'day folks,
I've had an '89 Classic for a few years now. It's been a good thing....SOOO reliable, goes anywhere, sounds great, would pull an ocean liner into dry dock......well, not quite, but ya know what I mean. It's been such a good ol' truck.
Anyway, I bought another one....this one is an '88 model. I see that there are plenty of trim differences between them. I'm wondering where the fuel pump would be as I have had a good look around under the car and can't see one. There only appears to a sender on the passenger side of the tank. My '89 has a long range tank, and I seem to recall that the pump is external to the tank, on a chassis rail. I haven't dropped the tank on the '88, but I can't see a loom leading to the top of the tank, and I can't hear one whirring away when I turn the ignition on.
The electronic box of goodies has been taken from under the driver's seat, so I've put in the one from my '89. Still no whirring of a pump anywhere. I took the air cleaner off and sprayed a good dose of fly spray down the intake, turned the key and she did fire up strongly. Yeah, you heard right about the fly spray, lol.......didn't have any "start ya bastard" and fly spray is flammable so it makes a great substitute.
It seems like she's gonna be a runner once I can get fuel to it. I reckon I just need to find the pump and either get it working or replace it.
Looking forward to hearing some advice on where the pump is located

    Gday there

All EFI Rangies from 1986 to 1989 with original steel fuel tanks have the pump inserted into the top of the fuel tank. Some people cut an access hole in the back floor but this does weaken the floor. A piece of floor, cut slightly larger off a wreck can be used as a cover plate. Otherwise you'll have to drop the tank, it's only 5 bolts or so. The thing on the chassis rail is the fuel filter unless someone has had a big fiddle with it. The pump is easily replaced with a generic Ford/Holden aftermarket pump off any 6 cyl EFI model of the late 80s to mid 90s

Awesome. Thanks for that Bee utey. What a bummer that there isn't an access hole in the floor. I'd have dropped the tank just to have a look if the towbar wasn't in the way, but I was running out of daylight this arvy, and a couple of the bolts at the back of the towbar proved to be bastards to shift, lol. I won't cut a hole through the floor. I'll get that bar out of the way and drop the tank.
I'm really curious to hear this thing run and see what sort of condition it's in....

You won't hear the fuel pump with just the ignition on with the flapper EFI system. Won't start the pump until there is airflow present. Turn ignition on and gently push the flap in the airflow meter open a bit by hand. Pump should start.

Hmmmmm. Thankyou for that Rick....much appreciated. I have a day off tomorrow, so I will gently push on that flapper, as you suggest, and see if I can hear the pump running.
If the car has been sitting for an extended period of time, as I am sure this one has, is it likely that injectors have seized? I'm leaning towards blaming the pump at this stage. I might go outside NOW and test the flapper thingie.....

I just went down to the car and tried moving the flap. I can hear a relay clicking somewhere inside the car.......obviously the pump relay.
Having said that, when I turn the ignition on in my '89 Rangie, I can most definitely hear the pump going without having to engage the starter or push the flap..........
Either way, it seems the pump in my '88 is knackered, so the tank will be coming out tomorrow

The fuel pump's relay and also its fuse should be under the drivers seat near the ECU. The wire to the fuel pump should be white with a purple stripe. Put a test light on the wires to make sure you've checked everything before removing the tank. Sometimes the various connectors between the relay and the tank can fail and go open circuit, usually due to an old pump drawing more current than normal and burning out a slightly dirty connector.

Thanks, Bee Utey. I checked the relay this morning and found I had power in and power out, so I went down the back and found the plug to the pump. I stuck a screwdriver in the intake to hold the flap open, turned the ignition on, and my multimeter confirmed power at the plug to the pump.
So I popped the rear bumper off, dropped the towbar and the tank, and pulled the pump. I put power directly to the pump and yep........knackered.
Thanks to you again, bee utey, cos the local wreckers doesn't have any Rangies at all, so I grabbed a pump out of a VR Commodore as you suggested. Got it into the Rangie, turned the ignition on with the flap jammed open. Nothing. Dropped the tank, popped the pump out, and found that one of the little spade terminals that goes onto the pump was SPLIT. This meant that it wasn't tight enough to grip the connector on the pump, and the wire slipped off as I pushed the assembly down into the tank.
So I went to Jaycar, got a pack of narrow spades, fixed it, and refitted the pump to the tank again.
Turned the ignition on with the flapper jammed open....BINGO, pump whirring away as it should. Cranked the engine over on the starter......crank crank crank crank. Nothin', lol. Dropped the tank just far enough to disconnect the fuel line from the pump, and turned the ignition on again. Pump turning, no fuel. Hmmmmm. I bet I've got the bloody wires around the wrong way.
Pulled the pump, swapped the wires on the pump. Ignition on, fuel everywhere. AWESOME!!
Reconnect fuel line, bolt tank back up. Turn ignition key without flap jammed open..........chug chug chug.....at least it was running.
Got under the bonnet and had a look around to see vaccuum lines missing from dizzy advance and manifold to plenum, so I sorted those out and now she's running beautifully.
A big big thanks to you guys for your input and suggestions.....much appreciated!!!
This '88 RRC is something I picked up for a few hundred dineros, mechanical condition completely unknown. The guy I bought it from had managed to get it to turn over but couldn't get it running, so he started wrecking it. The front seats went. I bought the speedo cable for my other Rangie ('89). I rang him back a week later and arranged to buy the whole thing off him. Now that I have got it running, it'll make a cheap hack for up on my property. I'll put some front seats in it, sort the brakes, and it'll be a good thing. Much more comfy than a trail bike, and it'll carry a heap more too!!
