My softdash fans are noisy, vibrate on full speed and generally a disappointment in the amount of air they do NOT shift.

funny thing is... every Jap car I've had, including the boxy little 121 Mazda, has a more appropriate A/C and fan system.

    - With more/colder/warmer air...

Or, you could spend a fortune (?) and have them balanced.... which may be the FIRST time in their 20 odd year life...

My A/C doesn't work (has alternator where compressor once was), but tried the fan on the way home from work today. No vibes, but does make a fair amount of fan noise.

I'm throwing whole smiths evaporator/heater/ fan away and going to fit a Vintage Air 61005 VUZA unit.

G'day Shane, should have known I'd find you here too. I had a RRC a few months ago......it was one that I picked up cheap and sold on for a profit. I only had the car a few weeks but I had the a/c re-gassed and yeah, the fan was a bit noisy. It pushed a fair bit of air though, so I wasn't that worried. It didn't vibrate at all though. The only problem was that condensation would occasionally run onto the passenger floor. I suspect that there should be a drain pipe to outside. Alot of cars have a rigid pipe but others have a rubber one. I didn't get as far as getting that sorted out as the car sold fairly quickly but no, the vibration definitely isn't normal.

If you are talking the 92 the fan is easily reached by pulling off the bottom plate under the aircon evaporator.
You will find the squirrel cage full of dust and fluff.
A good hit with a vacuum and brush will fix the noise and vibration.

I tried blowing out all the fins with an air hose @ 120psi. A lot of dust came out ... but it's still noisy and vibrates like crazy.

On the positive side .... It does work quite effectively, even today when it's 39 degrees outside. Other than the vents blowing themselves shut of course

I used to carry a couple of clothes pegs in the centre console that I'd use on hot days to stop the vents blowing shut.

A bit of silastic on the pivots makes them stiff enough not to flop. Ditto on the pivots of the vanes.

I also stuck some foam draft excluder on the outside of the vents where they meet the dash to stop any rattles.

Well that's a surprise... The A/C fans run smoothly and quietly.

    71

This scrappy bit of crappy plastic is all that supports those heavy fan motors. There not even braced back to the frail plastic evaporator unit mounts (that also just screw into the frail plastic). Has anyone figured out a simple way to support the fan motors so they can run quietly ( because they *are* smoothly running quiet fans!).
