Thread: Radiator mounts

Yup, I just converted mine to that later type because I can't find a core for the early type. I had to drill two holes into the first chassis crossmember for the bottom mounts, and get two of the proper brackets and drill holes up top for them. It's pretty straightforward when you look at it. All four holes use the same rubber mount as the original radiator.

With the old bottom mounts, I cut through one side with an angle grinder and bent them upwards and out of the way. The usual N70 batteries won't fit, but I had smaller ones there anyway. I have fan switches in hose adaptors in both top and bottom hoses, so I was able to twist each hose to adjust it slightly. And because the new radiator is taller, I added a bit of ally to the bottom of the fan shroud to extend it down to the mounts.

It was worthwhile doing it because those later radiators are much easier to get.

Thanks. That is way I decided to go, got a Fenix coming will do mods required. New Fenix was cheaper than getting old radiator re cored plus as you say is a bit bigger which is no bad thing.

You're welcome. Could you even find a core for the old style? The shop up here tried and couldn't, so I had to go with a later style new radiator.

I might get one as well as I'm not convinced the copper one I've got is that good. I could easily have gotten two or three Fenix radiators for what I've wasted on crappy new copper ones. My only concern with aluminium is how it would handle corrugations over the long term, but maybe it doesn't matter that much.

Oh yes, don't forget to earth an ali radiator so that any stray current doesn't destroy it in a few months.

Re re core my local Natrad agent said they could do it $380 for core it has to be built to order then extra to make it up. But reckoned Natrad still does them. Re the earth yep will do.

Just an update for you, Meccles. I didn't earth the radiator because, after more headache-inducing reading recently, it sounds like that was an outdated idea which only helped corrosion. I've got my radiator isolated on the standard rubber bushes.

. . . That's the company the PO used to 'repair' his radiator... at least, it had their stickers on the (cheaper than 'OEM equivalent') core....same core which has proved to have 'not' enough metal where it needs it, and is in slow process of pulling apart from the tanks...

Gidday Meccles,having just done this,I found loosening the bumper support bars helped let the radiator sit down properly on to the rubber feet.
The edges of the 3.9 rad initially struck the top of the supports.
If you have no oil cooler version this won't be an issue.
She's coming together fast if you're up to the radsweet.
