    Aircon With Compressor Low on the LH Side

    Is anyone familiar with this old set-up from the 80s? My '83 had a York Compressor, while this photo is from an '84 or '85 I wrecked for parts. I've taken the mounting bracket and I've used it with a Sanden, and am about to hook it up. I haven't seen anything like this in a parts book, but it must have been factory, the way the bracket is constructed.

    Looks like it could be an aftermarket MAPCO jobbie, I used to see a few of their kits on various 70's vehicles. Look behind the bracket, they usually had a logo stamped on the bracket somewhere.

    My old 81 rangie had the compressor down there and had one of those nice moulded plastic dash extensions that housed the vents and aircon controls.

    Might have been unicla kit.
    looks like a unicla/clarion compressor supplied with under dash units. few different other names like central was used for the same Japanese kits.


    mini York,sanden/unicla left and right mount.


    lot of these braket makers retired, One big victorian sold the patterns and jigs to a perth company.

    Thanks guys, I didn't think there would so many answers. I don't remember seeing anything on the bracket when I cleaned it up. It looks like it was made in a big press, with edges that have that look from being stamped and a couple of small folds, so someone had the tooling made up for it.

    The old compressor was an Ogura Wankel type. The Sanden fits straight in. It seems like a handy place for the aircon compressor - or at least I'll find out about that this week.

    This is similar location but the York. Vintage Air in US do a York to Sanden conversion bracket, can get it from Summit racing. I think I will let the York do some work though before it gets replaced

    Wow, they stuffed a York in there? I could barely get the Sanden in. When my York worked, I was amazed at the loud bokkity-bokkity-bokkity sound it made and the way it pulled the revs down.

    You might find that your power steering pump will leak from the inlet banjo fitting onto the aircon pump. I've just resealed mine again, but it needs something better than what the factory used. I also see you've got drain taps on the block - I pulled mine out and put plugs in because the damn things kept leaking coolant.

    My 77 had a York down there. My 81 in Saudi Arabia had a York high on the RH side.
    The problem with the 77 setup was that the York was fixed and had an idler pulley lower down again.
    The idler bearing was forever failing because of crap getting in the bearing, although it was replaceable and just a standard alternator bearing.

    Haha understood about the yacky yacky and pulling revs down! I lived with it for 14 years, this was dealer fit from 77. Never had an issue with power steering hoses though I do have fair bit of adjustment available on compressor hoses. Am only sticking with this unit because it is brand new, brought as clearance sale from ULR on ebay for less than $100, several years ago. I hadn't fully thought out what I was going to do with car/a/c at that time, I was planning on using the original M!V underdash unit with vents, but the Smiths/heater/HVAC unit was so rotten, as was all rest i looked at, have gone a bit newer with underdash unit.
    Appreciated the comments about photos. The car will be pretty well brand new once finished.

    I'm just about to change the idler bearing mine has for the crankshaft-water pump belt for the same reason. The tensioner for this aircon set-up is the power steering pump.
