Find TDC on the front pulley and confirm it by sticking a small screw driver down no.1 spark plug hole and rocking the crank past TDC. Lift the dissy cap and see that the rotor is pointing at no.1 lead or 180 degrees the other way. Use a short piece of heater hose and try to blow into no.1 plug hole with the engine a few degrees before TDC. If air blows in you're 1 turn out from TDC, then turn the engine 1 turn clockwise. If air bounces back at you then it should be on the firing stroke. Look under the rotor button to the pickup and line up the nearest tooth of the the star rotor with the pickup. If you can't turn your dissy far enough to line up everything you may have skipped a tooth on the timing chain meaning front cover off.
