    Electric Fuel Pump

    Hi All

Ive a 92 Rangie duel fuel and I believe the electric fuel pump has died.

Ive owner it since May and don't know its history as far as how regular tis been run on petrol but like most who convert them I suppose not as often as youre suppost to.

Listening to advice from bee utey I run it on fuel every day only switching over when at operating tempreture and I drive it for resonable periods.

I'm not worried about fuel cost .....its a Rangie so that was never a consideration when I purchased my 2Door or this one.

Mind you all indications is it runs reasonably economically on both and though I did have an issue with misfiring on fuel after a number of tanks of 98 octane fuel that issue has long since disappreared.

    OK back to thread.......

Several times it would'nt start .....just crank over .....this was the first tell tale sign i suppose and I would press and hold button to change over to gas (wait for solid colour) and she starts straight away.

    1) My question is how difficult is it to swap out unit .....I believe its in the tank.
    2) Do I need to drop tank to access it (it nearly has a full tank of fuel )
    3) Ive seen aftermarket pumps or would you opt for genuine article though there is a big
    diffrence in price.
    4) Can you retrofit an external pump like my two door though I do understand its fuel
injected or is that not feasible.

    5) What would a local mechanic with Rangie knowledge charge to do this.

    Appreciate all thoughts

    Cheers

Not 100% sure when the change over happened to the plastic fuel tank but it's around 1992. If your RR has a plastic fuel tank there will be a hatch in the floor over the fuel pump assembly, which can then be extracted without removing the fuel tank. Your LPG tank if it's inside will possibly be in the way. If your vehicle has either an original steel fuel tank or an accessory rear quarter tank, you will have to drop the tank to access the pump. Some towbars can add a couple of hours to the job, especially the one piece steel bumper bar combos with rusty bolts.

In all cases a generic Holden or Ford 6 cyl submersible EFI fuel pump can be fitted to the pump assembly in place of the buggered one. Once your old one has been extracted it can be matched at any decent parts shop. External pumps require a large low level input pipe or an internal low pressure pump to prevent the high pressure pump cavitating and wearing out prematurely. Not recommended unless you have excess cash to splash.

Example of a 1992 on complete fuel pump assembly:
