Sorry I don't frequent this part of the forum too often. I was talking to a mate the other day and just happened to overhear his friend had a 2 door Rangie; he was planning on using as a boat tower - you can imagine the state the car would end up in
Long story short I've been offered the car and I'm under the impression 2 door Rangies are beginning to get quite rare, borderline collectable? Is that the case?
I'll be looking at it this weekend, aside from the tailgate what do I need to look for? Rust locations, common faults, split dashs etc

Unmolested original examples are starting to become less common and are certainly more collectable than any other RRC.
Check under the mats at the front footwells - the windscreens leak when the rubbers get old and rust the floors out - and the bulk head. As JC said, check everywhere - there's a lot of steel in them - only the panels are aluminium, so they can disguise a world of hurt quite easily.
Rear tailgate will probably be shagged but new ones are available id you have deep pockets.
Depending on what you want to do with it, it could just need a tidy up, fresh brakes, etc or a full ground up rebuild - which will cost big dollars, even if you do it yourself.
Having said that, if you love 'em (I do) then find a good one, love it and use it.
They still drive really well when sorted and don't feel like any other 35 to 40 year old car you'll drive.

I think I've seen same car down Wises Road it looked smart. Thought maybe it was Forum member but nobody fessed up.
In a nutshell, yes they're collectable. I don't see too many on the roads anymore, will be nice to drive one around again one day when I get mine finishedAs good as my 93 Disco is, **** it's boring
I have 2 of them, both 79 models one on beige and one on mustard (or baby**** brown one bloke said to me once), one is a parts donor the other is okay but I had to strip it to bare bones to fix some sill and floor rust (was easier than doing it situ) and all the body rubbers were ****ed anyway so they needed changing. Haven't' done much in a year or so but hopefully with some time off over Christmas I can make some progress
Have all the bits just need to reassemble again.
Overall even good 4 door Rangie's are starting to fetch good money just look on car sales although I think some owners are a bit too optimistic on there prices. Good examples will sell for the asking price on the other hand some people are just taking the **** and expect people to pay top dollar for a basket case (a lot of RRC's are, there are some absolute ****tards that have owned them and should be banned from spanners for life).

There are a few out there but not many pristine ones. Most are rusted out POS's.
I would have purchased one except at the time I couldn't find one which didn't need a full tear down rust repair mech overhaul and respray. I needed a running vehicle, not a project- I have enough of those already!
So I bought a late hard dash 4 door, which tbh hasn't cost me a whole lot in maintenance.
If I had my time again, I'd buy an early hard dash LSE. The 2 door doesn't hold much sway over me anymore.
Roads?.. Where we're going, we don't need roads...

Some more places for rust: front floors, sills, rear chassis cross member - top of it - crap just sits in there above the fuel tank brackets/mounts, front inner guards, bonnet, upper and lower rear tailgates (alloy window frames are available), rear corner just behind the rear side windows (under the black vinyl), rear floor round the fuel filler pipe panel, rear lower body frame (under the lower tailgate.
One of ours also rusted through the chassis just near the trailing arm mount as it was parked on a hill and the water must have sat there for long periods of time causing damage. It wasn't a daily driver at that point.
