    Internal Cages

Have had a mate roll his RRC a while ago and reading a recent thread about someone purchasing an L322 because of an RRC rollover, I was wondering if a simple internal cage was (commonly) available for the Classic Rangie.

Nothing too elaborate and not for comp purposes, just something to give the mate's wife the warm and fuzzies and stop the roof collapsing down onto the seats (again ).

    Thoughts and ideas appreciated

I have one bent up in my shed, will fit it one day when I get time. An associate and I bent the hoops up, has b pillar and c pillar hoops. Made it for the exact same reason your mate wants one.

I often thought about that when I still had a Defender. I made do by installing a cargo barrier. Have done the same thing with my D1. Dumb question though. Are internal roll bars legal on road cars and if so, which type of ROPS? I wouldn't mind doing some up myself!

I believe they need to be protected (padded) where the risk of contact exists.

B & C pillar hoops and maybe braces back to rear wheel arches is what I had in my head.

Which is fine but you can not use the rear seats legally once you fit it

Did not know that. Do you have any more detail on this Tombie ? Whould a single front hoop and a cargo barrier solve this ?

    Cargo barrier

I saw the picture of a rolled Disco once that simply had a cargo barrier fitted.

It is hard to believe the strength the barrier must have had for the result, no deformation at that point of the body, and, they are legal, even for back seat passengers.

    Cheers

Google 'VSB 14' (Vehicle Standards Bulletin) and go to section 'LK Seating and Occupant Protection'. It will have all you need to know.

Briefly, you can have a B pillar hoop and a C pillar hoop that is connected with braces at the roof level. The C pillar hoop can be braced diagonally to the rear wheel well section.

There is a defender thread on here somewhere with an external ... er, "Heavy duty roof rack". Some nice strong external tubing runs up to this "roof rack" from the A and C pillars. It would make for one seriously tough "roof rack"

This would be vastly superior to an internal cage that would restict space and you would risk braining yourself on in the event of an accident.
