it's a separate unit ... whip the evaporator and fan unit out and check them. The thing will almost certainly be full of tracer dye. So if there isn't any signs of die on it, give it a clean and refit with new 'O'rings. If you re-assemble the dash area screw down the difficult to get to 10mm nuts that carry the fan unit.. .it will run nice and silently (rather than rattling like buggery and vibrating the whole dash).

James, I haven't posted anything about it yet, but I put in an entirely new system with the evaporator up in the cargo barrier. (And it wasn't my idea - I saw it here on a couple of Defenders.) It works really well and I didn't have to try and make the old unit run like a new one. I did once have the entire dash and original aircon out and the evaporator was absolutely full of dirt and dust, so you'll have to remove yours and give it a good clean. I was going to adapt and reuse my system but where I live is blazing hot most of the time and this is one of our main cars, so a full replacement made sense.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
