Hand Brake adjustment ....Where is it?

    Hi All,

The 92 Classic I bought the handbrake has never worked ....luckily we live on the flats ...well most of Perth is flat within reason so a working
handbrake in an auto wasent really an issue for me.

I checked a month ago ....unlike my 81 classic there's that large round thingy where the tail shaft joins but theres no access to adjust the brake shoes ...theres a couple of round holes one's drilled deeper than the other but they both hit metal.

I've searched posts where you adjust from the drum underneath and read that later models were adjusted via an access on the disc roter at on the rear wheels ....I have the Rangie on jack stands at the moment with both wheels off and there is no access to them if the Rotors did have brake shoes behind them.

So my question is how do you adjust the handbrake on a 1992 RRC Vogue SE

    Cheers

There should be two adjustment points. One is a hex nut (from memory) that sticks out of the backing plate, facing the front of the car. The other is a spinner on the outer cable accessible from inside the cabin, under the console bin. Adjust the nut on the backing plate first with the cable slackened so that the drum spins freely, then take up the cable slack inside the cab. Dropping the drum off is 1/2 hours work, just undo the tail shaft and swing it aside, undo the screws and remove the drum for inspection of the shoes.

    Hi bee utey

Thanks for the prompt response .....I'll check now there's still light (7.00pm) here .....

I believe (and will check) that the drum turns freely without the handbrake on .... and just to clarify do I adjust the hex nut till I hear it just binding on the drum and then adjust the spinner from inside cabin.

    Cheers

OK ....adjusted nut only 1 maybe 1 and a half turns the drum still spins checked in the cab pulled the handbrake but won't go high enough to enguage the ratchet.

Got underneath backed it of half a turn checked again and the handbrake comes up a couple of knotches to ingauage ...the rear wheels (on jack stands) however can still be turned.

I believe the previous owner has adjusted the spinner bee utey mentioned to the maximum ....I'll leave it on the stands and tackle it tomorrow morning ....

    Cheers

Hand brake adjustment .....Where is it

    Hi All

I apologize in advance ...... I've got the Rangie with both rear wheels off the ground on jack stands.

I've adjusted handbrake till it clicks 2-3 notches on ratchet and underneath drum is locked tight .....My question is both the rear wheels turn ....The tailshaft doesn't is that normal

Yes, that's right. With the tailshaft locked and both rear wheels off the ground, the wheels will turn - the far one from what your turning by hand should be going the opposite direction. The pinion and crown wheel will be locked, but the axles will be spinning on the spider gears.

Put one wheel on the ground and check it then, you shouldn't be able to turn it then.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
