Absolutely correct, (as usual) and as he is not far removed from said Time Periods, his ruling carries added gravitas...

Only good thing is.... You've got a more robust (3.5l) engine than the later 3.9l plus a 'REAL' transfer case, albeit a noisy gear-coupled one... not the Borg Warner / handiwork of Satan, - like the car I sold last weekend...

You have taken the first steps in becoming a competent Land Rover Mechanic.
The 3.9's have way better power though .... I reckon disco 1's are great cars myself.... buy them cheap, tear there guts out and you have a 3.9, LT230 and R380 .... all ready to throw into the rangey

Guess what drivetrain my crappy old Range Rover runs

With Due Respect, I was singularly unimpressed with my 3.9's "power". Could have overlooked the Drinking Problem IF it 'Produced the Goods'. It didn't... eg, - Towing a nearly empty 4x6 box trailer/cage, it was embarrassingly unable to keep in sight of a 1 tonne traytop ute with at least half tonne of Tradie-tools on board....and a 6x8 heavily loaded trailer.

The 3.5 '89 Rangie (LPG) that infected me would happily tow a 2 tonne trailer/sweeper. and was very quick off the mark! Granted, in it's deep dark past the engine had been re-cam'd specifically for towing (0 - 90km/h) but it was well-used when I started driving it.

Without the trailer, it would frighten modern cars at the lights.. Put it back to Petrol and it would frighten your Driver's licence as well..

I'm told that the 3.5 is more tolerant of abuse such as running too hot...

Agree. Excellent size/value/performance (300tDi). Land Rover's answer to the Isuzu and Pajero which came standard with A/C, carpets, sound system and power steering.... and sensible price

Why not just put the Rangie seats into the Disco 1. ? Then you've got Comfort and a more useful load-carrying body that can easily load up a recliner lounge chair or small freezer etc.
My old Paj brought home the first chair, but had to get the Father-In-Law's 'Musso' to bring home another one...wouldn't fit into the Rangie.

    - Plus, you'd never need worry about a leaky or rusting upper tailgate !

Maybe it's just me ... But I rekcon the discos look awful .... modern ugly interior ... ugly body ... soulless ... They do nothing for me

I used to have a 3.5 ... there is no comparison ... the 3.9 would leave it for dead in every aspect. Yours had serious issues if it struggled towing a 6x4 trailer. This is what I tow with mine

It pulls it along quite well at 85->90km/h ... drinking horendous amounts of lpg in the process

Sort of agree... the '89 Rangie was on LPG, and towing around town it averaged nearly 3 km/litre (about 8.4 mpg in Old Money)

Welcome to the madhouse Rangie's are a love/hate kind of thing but more the former than the latter for me I've found.
I also have a Disco and they are soulless as Shane mentioned, probably why I want to get rid of it. Had 3 Discos and they all have that 'Japanese' feel of sameness no more Discos for me unless I need and engine etc...

    What have I done!!!

    Welcome ….. AndyC

As Meccles , Grumbles and others have said they are a vehicle that you can have a love hate relationship but for the greater part they RRC will give you a smile every time you jump into her that other marquee owners cannot understand.

Out of the box they have always been one of the most comfortable and capable 4x4’s and I believe great value for money and once you understand that fuel economy was never its strong suit especially in a vehicle as aero dynamic as a brick you will both get along fine.

Please post some pics ….always interested in seeing someone’s newly acquired toy.

Finally ….you will find some EXCELLENT people on this site who will assist you wherever possible and are generous in their knowledge and in giving of parts where they want no or very little monetary gain.

I’ve been the recipient of such generous gestures and while I won’t embarrass them they know who they are …..

Look forward in hearing when she fires up for the first time …. You gotta love the burble of a classic V8

    Cheers

    Baggy
