    Colouring in set. Paint by numbers. And other ideas...

    Thinking of doing something crazy with the wheels / roofrack / accessories / maybe barwork - It might upset the Ardennes Green paintjob though. Am I barking mad??? Probably.... I'm thinking something properly crazy - Like Fluorescent Orange or something equally as contrasting
    Maybe the 'look' is frowned upon / not desirable and I should conform to olive drab and wrap it in Camo instead, like every other Perentie out there..

    Won't trip over it at night though...
    I'm not respraying the car, but I may have an opportunity to wrap some areas or change the blacked out pillars into a colour etc.
    I scratched the roof the other day, pulling the roof rack off, because I was an impatient *****. So it's my own dumb fault for being stupid.

    So now the roof pretty much has to come off and I was going to have it blasted & powder coated - because the salt here is atrocious. Thing is, I thought a fluoro orange roof might be a good idea in terms of aerial visibility. maybe stencil a big H and a circle on it as well, and use it as a Helipad. Just kidding.
    Well the whole thing's got me a bit peeved at myself, because I'll have to attend to this sooner than later. I have no idea if I should have gone with my earlier thought of just spraying it silver (heat rejection) or if that will detract from the ardennes green.
    It's actually a tougher decision than I first thought.

    I don't know a truckload about the assembly of the RRC, but it would seem to me that the only really pesky part to spray are the door jambs and the rear tailgate jamb - because pretty much everything else unbolts. Am I correct in thinking this? Because it may be easier to deal with a complete respray if that is the case, when I pull the v8 out later this year.

    To me it makes sense to paint the engine bay a generic colour, like gloss black, but I also think that something that reflects light might also make it easier to see stuff. but then I end up with two different colours, so I go back to black - which is a generally acceptable engine bay standard colour, and allows freedom of choice to do whatever down the track, without having to spray the engine bay.


    Anyone got some colour suggestions?

    When I first rebuilt my Land-Rover, I painted everything under the bonnet in primary colours - so a red brake pedal box, green engine accessory, and so on. My parts guy was horrified but I loved it. Anyway, on a Rangie everything comes off and can be painted on its own, which is one of the beauties of the car. I'm trying to figure out how to do this because I've got clear coat falling off everywhere and the car looks like a hillbilly special, but I've only got an open carport to paint in so painting each panel in somewhere enclosed would be easier than doing the whole car at once.

    My recommendation - since you want to go crazy - spray the tintable UPOL Raptor liner :-)

    You can spray it outdoors/ in a carport ( on a still day) IF you use a shutz gun - and as its tintable you can choose any colour you want.

    I'm currently doing my 130 in it - but spraying using a HVLP gun and a 3mm nozzle ( in my garage)

    great stuff- it definitely makes a statement.

    I've used a 3mm HVLP gun on mine,and sprayed a tintable with a 3:1 hardener, plus 10% tint and 10% thinners. This gives a smoother finish than you will see in the video above.

    You can basically use any colour auto paint tint, jus have the shop mix it up without binders, so you only add pure tint to the raptor.

    that's very interesting ... look at hte next suggested video after that though

    the other product seems far better than raptor (raptor looks to scratch very easily).

    its always hard to draw a conclusion from a vid like that- was one coat allowed to harden? was the other still green? did they use enough hardener? I can't say.

    I'm happy to provide the feedback on my project though - Ive used KBS rust coat and raptor liner - i'd say good prep is 99% of the outcome - and the issues ive had have been largely prep based - i.e paint failures due to poor surface preparation - this has included spraying over KBS rust coat that was over 24 hours old - don't bother - either spray a top coat over KBS within an hour of it tacking off, or be happy with the KBS finish. Nothing will stick to it well - even after sanding.

    Epoxy primer ( 2 part primer) is simply a far superior product to any etch primer or 1K primer that paints straight out of the can or tin ( i.e no hardener added prior to application ) etc - so I'd always do an epoxy primer first - then paint over the top.

    With the KBS , it does not need a primer, and sticks best to rough/ old steel.

    I'll report back on the strength of the raptor - but i cant replicate that problem in the video - possible as my liner tint is a far lighter tint.

    i'm officially calling BS on that previous review you linked to about Raptor scratching easily. I had a go at scratching one of my panels with a screwdriver - I was pressing hard - its tough.

    I refreshed my wheels with Dupli-Color Custom wrap. It's a peelable paint like Plastidip. The finish was great and very easy to achieve, much, much easier than previous attempts on other wheels using standard automotive rattle can stuff.

    It's a shame it only comes in matt finishes but you can get a semi-gloss appearance by waxing them.

    I am tempted to try it on the roof as the rest of the car is white and I like the idea of a black roof to match the black wheels. Or maybe just a massive Union Jack (I'm a Brit).
