    Rear Electric Windows

    Hi All,

    1990 Range Rover SE

    On the weekend a passenger wound down a rear (passenger side) window - but the window wouldn't go back up....

    I haven't resolved the issue, but here is what I have done so far...

    * Checked the fuses - all ok (apart from one, which was for the cigarette lighter - which is now fixed. )
    * Tried to use the door switch - window could go down, but not up.
    * Tried the main switch in the console - window could go down, but not up.
    * At this stage - the window is all the way down...
    * Pulled out the console - swapped over the switch for the faulty door, with a switch from a working door... Still no go - and the working door kept working, so my mind says that switch isn't to blame.
    * While in the console - swapped the relays over. (At least I think that they are relays). Front doors still work - rear door still won't.
    * I have a spare door (damaged). Pulled it apart and removed the window motor. (It's a front door, but I *assume* that the motor is the same front vs rear)
    * Connected the motor directly to the battery - motor turns. So I have confirmed that the spare motor is ok.
    * Pull off the door card
    * Checked to see if the window was binding somehow OR if there were broken teeth on the mechanism - looked ok.
    * Connect the spare motor into the loom - try switches (on door & in console) - motor doesn't work..
    * Hmmm - this suggests to me that there is a fault in the wiring/loom.. Which kinda doesn't make sense, because the window powered down...
    * Went and removed a battery from one of the other cars.
    * Connected the in-door motor directly to the battery - window goes up!
    * So - I'm still thinking that it's a wiring issue? (Although again - that doesn't make perfect sense to me because the window powered down)
    * Yes - when testing, I checked that the button in the console that prevents windows from going up/down was in both positions.. And - sitting in the drivers seat, regardless of the position of this switch - both front windows work.

    So - could it be the switch which stops people from using the windows? (I only just thought of this) Hmmm

    Or - could it be a wiring issue?

    I put the window back up. Re-fitted the door card. Removed the rear window switches from the console to prevent accidental usage. And went to bed.

    Any ideas?

    I don't have this problem at all ....................................... Mostly because my back windows don't work at all I have tried to find the relays for the rear windows a couple of times .... Did you find them ? ( I have always spent 3minutes looking and given up ... as I don't like rear windows down either way).

    Not sure where it is in a hard dash but a soft dash/D1 window lift ECU has issues with dry solder joints for the rear windows, I've fixed this before. Worth a shot, only other thing I could think of is dodgey switches but you ruled those out. Only issue I've ever had personally with the window motors is actually some of the teeth stripping on the regulator arm and I've never seen a issue with the actual wiring side of the power windows, only the ECU and switches.

    Thanks Chivalry, I didn’t even know that there was an ECU for the windows! I had assumed that they worked with relays and switches.. I need to investigate further.. Rear Electric WindowsRear Electric Windows

    Its the plastic "thing" with all the wires going to it under the center consoles lift out glovebox. However it only does the front windows. I haven't traced out the wiring diagrams to find the rear window relays ( another "oneday" job).

    I had the same thing in my Soft Dash and yes it was some dry solder joints in the window lift ECU.

    The rears wouldn't work at all and the front only with the ignition on (they are supposed to work for a bit after you turn the car off). I had a go at resoldering all the joints where the plug socket attaches to the circuit card and sweet all was good with the world.

    That was for 3 months and they started to play up again, so I changed out the ECU with a Discovery 1 one.

    Not sure where the ECU is for the hard dash but the soft dash one is behind the glove box on the left when you flip the glove box down.
