I think it was the 1990 model year in the UK.

1970 to 1989. The MY 90 was the first of the 3.9 variant.

And in the rover P6 before the RRC - 1968.

So the '87 I'm driving should in unmolested form be a 3.5 efi flapper? I've been telling porkies to people

Certainly did. The series 111 P5 got the v8 in the last year/s of production. IIRC the "B" in P5B (and P6B ) alludes to the Buick heritage of the motor.
