Where do you get those nice brass crimp fittings and pliers? The type that most factory Jap stuff has. I had some a while ago and lost the crimping plies, the only pliers I could get were expensive (to buy not quaility) Navara one's. Not much choice for the fittings themselves either, shops mostly only stock the squash ones.
Terminals these days are available everywhere. The pliers are ok. However you never squeeze tight enough like a factory joint (that almost welds by compression). Ebay has a vast array of terminals. If you intend to use terminal blocks ensure the spade terminal have the 'tag" on the back of them so they don't fall out of the housings. Ebay uk is the place to look for some of the better quality stuff (they salt the roads over there, so the wiring unless waterproof dies very quickly with copper rot/green connectors).

I'd give these crimpers a go. You are talking un-insulated terminal crimpers I imagine? I never use insulated terminals ( even though I have them and ratchet crimpers for them here). I reckon they are crap and you can never be sure you have a good connection. I use the un-insulated terminals and put a touch of solder on them if I don't have enough confidence in the crimps.
I find kits no good, they always come with all the terminals you don't need. Instead, work out what you need.... buy a big kit of ring terminals, and the spade terminals you need. The brass ones are probably cheaper terminals. They look fancy but will tarnish. the nickel/tin coated brass terminals are probably better ??
My problem is I keep trying to buy the cheap stuff. Its hard to pick quality when buying on ebay/web shops. You can get the quality waterproof connectors blocks readily enough, but I'm to much of a cheap arse (they are very expensive).

Jaycar have a some good quality crimpers & terminals.
I still haven't got around to putting this damn car back together ( sigh )..... so much to do. I'm tyring to get the yard ready for an extension (putting up and and knocking down carports etc)

many hours work... That old carport over the last 2years i've had the 11 enormous pine trees around it felled .... then chopped them up, built the bonfires, burnt them. Hired a big tracked stump grinder and spent 2 days grinding .... then knocked down the old 12 x 6 carport ( 12 bloody uprights and 3 million nails ) and back bladed the area to clean it up.

So I get home from work last week ...... and see they have marked out on the ground where the earth works are to be done ..... Holly crap, my idea that I will be able to still get the caravan in and out of the shed is a bloody crazy dream of somesort. I quickly clean up all the **** that is around and drag it out .... Look at that. The damn caravan will be touching the wall of the house without a car infront. So the next issues. That bloody carport I have spent weeks putting up. Thankfully I made it higher when I chucked it back up. I back backed the caravan up to it with the tractor..... And immediately groaned.... there isn't a snowmans chance in hell I can back the caravan in there with the tractor....... sooo......

I hadn't purchased any stoneguard to paint the bar with so it would match the rear bar while it was off.... and it was still primer, so I hunted through the shed and found this ... must be 20years old. Old pre-mixed GMH satin black acrylic laquer.

You can see the previous repairs I have done with rivets and araldite in the past. It just does NOT work. I could just peal the araldite off with my finger nails. So this time I broke out the plastic welder. I hate plastic welding. I purchased the welder years ago from a friend in Tasmania. It paid for itself just by fixing the bumpers and dash in the old Citroen CX (I was quoted far more to repair the bumpers at the local place than the welder cost). Anyway, when I got the welder I visited the local plastic welder and asked if I could buy a variety of welding rods from him for different plastics...................... And immediatly decided plastic welding wasn't going to be something I was going to do unless I had no choice. This guy desperately tried to sell me his plastic welding business the entire time I was there. He was the sickest person with empahsima I've ever come across outside of a hospital. The fumes make me short of breath to when I use the plastic welder (though weirdly if you google it, it really isn't toxic ?? ).
Anyway, I found the ABS plastic rod would stick to it.

Its weird plastic the ABS, it doesn't hot air weld nicely (it "sort of" bubbles and melts). The plastic welding rod is brittle like a stick of spagetti too. If your imagining a lovely perfect finish and a piece of plastic repaired better than new ........................... keep dreaming :lol2:

It does however make remarkably strong repairs (if you brace the area properly from behind, it will break beside the repair next time [bighmmm] )
I'm going to have to make a new center console and radio surround for this car. I've had a look at a few youtube videos on making consoles. And it certainly isn't difficult. You just cut it out in MDF/whatever and cover with vinyl. However for now I just need to get the damn car back together. I will be making a new console and radio surround for it though.

I did this mess at the end. I converted it from the borg warner transfer case to the lt230 so I could use the diff lock.

all the other repairs aside. the metal bracket that holds it to the car fell out when I pciked it up. So I have plastic welded all the bits shown here back together. This really is a woefully made piece of merde.
To hold stuff together (like using another pair of hands) I use a variety of different size plastic spring clamps. They're black with orange grip pads, look like welding clamps and cost jack from $2 shops. Get them in packets of 10 usually.
You just clamp 2 pieces together using some backing which can be flat, curved or angled and do whatever you have to.
I use marine ply instead of MDF for door cards and stuff like that. MDF absorbs moisture from the air and gradually distorts and expands. I figure if I'm going to the trouble of fabbing something to look good and function well in an interior it may as well keep doing it for a looong time. Because the size of pieces that get used in an interior is quite small the extra cost is not that great.

I was going to try ply first. There is quite a few bends in the console, so I will see if ply is flexible enough to twist angle up into the box at the back. MDF is horrible stuff in everyway. Its not nice for your health cutting or dealing with it either.Quote:

I'm not sure what is going on in the world of cars lately. The shiny ****box ... sure isn't very shiny lately. It hasn't been washed since the last post on this thread. She been doing the school run through the bush each day .... I still havne't put the dash back together. there is still not intact dash or carpet in the front, I haven't finished putting it back together yet. It just starts and drives each day as expected. A few weeks ago I was driving down a local gravel road and I heard a big "BANG" ... I thought WTF was that .... And could see a big bin spinning in mid air behind me.... How in the hell did I hit that ?? It took me two days to find damage on the car. The passenger side doors have been hit at the bottom edges and are quite dented. The big bin must have fallen forward as I was driving past, and hit the front passenger door ... then got picked up by the crease between the two doors and fling it into the air. So now I have two doors to fix and I haven't even finshed asembling the damn thing ...... sigh.
The point of this post? The ****box, she hasn't been cleaned in months. It drives down muddy (now dusty) trails everyday. The kids are complaning there school uniforms get covered in mud just trying to get out of the car. yet even my wife has said "what is with the people asking about the car". I left it in long tern parking down in melbourne a few weeks back. I loaded all the luggage in the back to be greated by for the 4 people working there wanting to help ... they had never seen such an "old" car there before and were amazed at what an "original" range rover looked like. a week later I have the car trailer on in the local bunnings carpark and someone in there early 20's comes over to ask me about the cool range rover (the boss women was most impressed ... we usually get this from old men when I'm driving an old Citroen).
It looks like the old ****box rangie has become a "classic old car" overnight ( how insulting, the ****box is the newest car I've ever owned!). I might even treat the ****box to a wash and fix the speedo that hasn't working since I drove through a body of water that was deeper than I expected a couple of weeks back.
