To leather up or not ?

I retrimmed a Citroen DS many years ago with my sister singer tredle. I've got an industrial singer now (purchased to retrim another in leather). I'm more into reality now.... There ins't a snowmans chance in hell I'll have the time or money to do it in the next decade.... Oh well, it'll wait another 20years until I retire :) ....actually it'll probably be 30years before us Gen X's are allowed to retire .... None of this retiring at 55 llke the last two generations ... we'll be working into our 70's as no doubt we will not be allowed to access super or pension until then.

I have been told that there is a difference between upholstery leather and automotive leather. In the way that it’s treated. Car interiors get quite hot... I was thinking of doing the same thing - using leather to retrim the seats in my Rangie..

My 81 2 Door is velour .... the 92 is Leather.

Like the look of Leather although mine wasn't treated well by previous owner.

I've cleaned it (very mild detergent) and used leather wax type polish to enrich it as the leather was quite hard.

The 92 has imitation sheepskins seat covers on the front at the moment so heat on summer in Perth not a problem but I can see it would be an
issue if seats were left uncovered..... what do others use to soften or keep the leather soft.

I agree with incisor that sheepskin is the way to go .... got a nice pair of full sheepskin from my old Disco that I had stored away ......
I was going to use them in the 2 Door but while its parked up awaiting an engine rebuild I'll use them in the 92 ... now to remember where??

The sheepskins do bolstered your height on what is a commanding view too [biggrin]

I know this thread is getting a bit old, but as a suggestion - swap the original classic front seats for a pair of P38 electric seats. The latter are a little larger and are far more comfortable. I got a pair for next to nothing from a vehicle that was being wrecked. A few bad panels were replaced with matching Connelly leather and the $600 cost was worth every cent

Only minor changes are required to the mounts and the power is fairly easy to install - just move the switch panel from the sides to the front with a simple bracket - this is necessary because the new seats are a bit wider than the originals

Are they as comfortable as the classic seats to sit in for any length of time ? That is probably a cheap easy way to swap out worn out seats. I wonder if you can throw all the electronics away and fit the mechanical bits from the old seats ( I like manual seats. They work when you need them and adjust more quickly that waiting for motors ).

Well Shane- it is a personal thing but I find the P38 seats far more comfortable than the classic seats - They do not appear to be bigger until you sit in them. than you realise they have more front-to-back depth and well as width. I'm tall (not fat) and enjoy the extra support

Not sure if you can convert them to manual but the electric hookup is so simple, why not use it? You only have to touch the controls to change the slide, tilt and rake. Far better (and more comfortable) than the electric seats in my 93 Range Rover with that stupid mirror adjustment system that always fails

So long as they stayed soft and comfortable .... I'm a fan! Every other car in the world seems to have gone to ****house rock hard seats .... I really don't understand why.... Maybe they think people expect the seats to "feel sporty".

These seats are very soft - especially the Connelly panels that replaced the original torn ones. These seats came from a wrecked P38 but I did own a P38 for many years and that is how I knew the seats were excellent. Do not confuse them with the leather seats fitted as original equipment to 92-95 Classics (I also have a 93 SE) The latter are OK, but not as soft nor as generous in shape.

There are plenty of P38's being wrecked and because that is usually due to the engine and/or suspension problems, it should not be too difficult to get the seats at a reasonable price
