Any tips to remove the old one?
I've got a selection of grazed knuckles trying to pry it off. I'm guessing it has rusted a bit.
Make sure you are turning the damn thing the right way, I'm pretty sure you should be turning the spanner to the passenger side clockwise. And by turning I mean swiftly smacking it with a mallet whilst holding the hub with a screwdriver. Or buy the correct tool I think it looks like a grinder hub tool.
Cheers Jim
Wait disregard that looking at the photo it's different...
Yeah, they're different.
big nut holding the viscous unit onto a long spindle shaft on the waterpump ... not like the modern nut on hub type like ours.
I have vague recollection of doing a few on my RRC and more of them on my old SD1's back in the day.
I think I remember removing the fan(your'e going to remove it anyhow) bit of a PITA, but with a 1/4 drive socket and a lot of patience, it should come off, so that leaves the viscous on the watepump shaft.
Long large open ender, or plumbers wrench over the rear collar, and against the viscous unit, and a few taps with a hammer.
A bit of wriggling with a large open ender if you have one.
Sorry can't remember the size .. my dad used to have trucks, and I used whatever fit out of his toolbox .. could have been 1 inch(or more) spanners.
Basically I just used to whack and/or jimmy it from back to front.
