    Name that fan hub assembly!

The viscous clutch is frozen solid - I'm trying to understand what I need to buy & how to remove. All I seem to be able to find is rover viscous clutches that screw directly onto the hub.

The fan assembly appears to be secured by a locknut that's accessible by removing the cowl.

Its a p76 V8 with what I think is a rover water pump housing (I could be wrong there).

You just undo the nyloc but then draw viscous coupling off shaft is a straight slide on fit only held there by the nut. Then unbolt fan from viscous coupling. Normally you at least undo shroud from top and let it lay back towards engine for access

Thanks - can you help me ID the replacement part? is there a part # for the viscous coupling/ is it the standard 3.5 coupling?

Or maybe I should just move to the thermo conversion...

    Could be ERC2849.
Yours looks like a 7 blade fan, and that's one of the VC units listed for that fan.

Don't waste you time with it, many have tried including myself. It's not worth the hassle, time and money.

Still enjoying mine with a tired (600,000 +k's) 350 mooring block on gas with a standard RRC rad.

Only downside is replacing the brushes in the 55amp Bosch alternator every couple of years coz one of the fans is on all the time the motor is going.

Best mod I did, quite a while ago.

I never really had issues with electric fans on my RRC.
But then again it didn't have A/C and suchlike.

I actually did have issues with it, but never overheating(ie. the fans having the ability to cool in any conditions.
The only problem I had was with the 60 amp(or less!) alternator, not having enough grunt to keep the battery topped up when running on a hot tropical night(ie. headlights on and whatnot).

Changed the stupidly unreliable Lucas Alt for an 80amp Bosch out of a 240 or 260 Z, basically straight fit .. and problem solvered!

... still have the last 'stupidly unreliable' Lucas alternator I got rebuilt too. It may still work(??) RRC had to be rid of many moons ago.

Those electric fans on my old '79 saved me between 0.5 to 1 km/l of fuel consumption. Price of fuel wayyyy back then wasn't really the issue, range from the tank given the thirst of the V8 was. Every 0.5 k/lt made a massive difference(mainly on the open road).

Yeah the only time I had the alt light glowing was one night going to meet up with family in the Grampians after a meeting in Warrnambool.

It was wet and dark. Both fans going, wipers on full, headlights and driving lights on (all HID then) stereo on and the heater fan on full to stop fogging the windscreen.

Worst it ever got and not really an issue even with such a **** ant alternator.

    cheers, DL

AFAIK that VC and fan has been obsolete for many years. I think it was the type on my 77 RRC.

The only way to get a new one is to get a new water pump with the later type of fan boss and buy a VC and fan to suit.

    Regards Philip A
