    1990 3.9 V8 temp gauge

    Gday All,

    Are the temp gauges in these similar to the Disco's where by the time it starts to move your in big trouble ? wondering if I should be looking at a separate temp gauge so I can monitor it .

    If anyone has any pics of where they have mounted a temp or any other sort of gauge would be handy.

    If the standard temp gauge gets to halfway, PULL OVER! Mine always sits just below half, one time I saw it start moving so I pulled over and all my coolant had bubbled out due to the fan not working.
    Get an after market temp gauge for piece of mind, I don't have one but I watch my gauge like a hawk.

    Mine has a factory low coolant sensor...when it gets low in the overflow the light flashes at me on the dash.
    I have also fitted a seperate digital temp gauge in front of the dash pod. I will see if I can get a picture.
    I bought it on eBay many years ago.

    Your 1990 should have the low coolant warning light in the dash. Check it and make sure it works. Ensure the wiring on the cap is clean and free of verdigris as well.

    The temperature gauges in these vehicles is at best, "useless".

    You can choose whatever reputable brand aftermarket gauge you like - I have redarc 52mm gauges. VDO / Smiths / auto meter etc are all good, but it will depend on whether or not you want a mechanical (capillary) temp gauge, a thermocouple type or an electrical sender unit version.

    whatever you do stick with a reputable brand. They are shipped calibrated (certificate included or sticker on the unit) and accurate, unlike many 'fancy' multi-unit digital LCD cheapies out there.

    After all, you've already got junk gauges in the instrument cluster, why would you duplicate it?
